Principal Process Engineer

As a Principal Process Engineer, you are accountable for the definition, development, deployment, and lifecycle support of bioprocess equipment across the Berkeley, CA site and Bayer’s global manufacturing network;
You support multiple biologics modalities, including rFVIII, mAbs, Cell Therapy, Gene Therapy, and emerging platforms within Product Supply CMC&T;
You independently lead complex technical projects and programs as a technical authority, developing robust technical and business option spaces for complex topics and guiding stakeholders toward sound, data‑driven decisions;
You also coach and mentor junior engineers to build sustainable technical capability within the organization.

This position is part of the global organization, Process Engineering & Technologies (PE&T), within Bayer Pharma Product Supply Division;
It sits in the Process Eng & Technologies Implementation (PE&TI) group located in Berkeley, CA as well as in Germany (Wuppertal, Leverkusen & Berlin), consisting of process and automation engineers;
Across Bayer Pharma, PE&T is accountable for enabling and supporting (bio-)process operations and for developing Bayer’s cell and gene therapy Next Gen processing platforms;
In this role, you support the delivery of bioprocess equipment technologies to Bayer's global network.

Responsibilities
  • Be accountable for the technical design, fabrication, delivery, commissioning and qualification of bioprocess equipment to Product Supply;
  • Ensure the performance and robustness of delivered equipment to Product Supply;
  • Partner with Biological Development and/or external scientists to develop deep process understanding, translate this into bioprocess equipment requirements, and communicate effectively with equipment fabricators;
  • Maintain a broad understanding of business direction, translate this into your scope of responsibility, ensure alignment, and work to resolve both technical and non‑technical misalignments;
  • Deliver anticipated results that contribute to business and technical goals, balancing business needs and technology development ambitions while delivering bioprocess solutions;
  • Operate independently within accountable areas, leading projects of larger scope or high complexity and serving as a go‑to technical authority for peers;
  • Perform technical management of vendors and projects, including oversight of budget and schedule adherence, and proactively manage and communicate with internal and external stakeholders using sound judgment on decision‑making and escalation;
  • Continuously self‑educate on bioprocess equipment and overall market trends to maintain subject matter expert–level knowledge of the field;
  • Execute projects primarily from Berkeley, CA, with readiness to support activities at remote locations as needed.
Required Qualifications
  • Engineering degree or equivalent;
    Chemical Engineering preferred;
  • Professional registration and/or certifications as appropriate;
  • High degree of technical competency with strong analytical and problem‑solving skills;
  • Firm understanding of the multifaceted nature of working in a GMP environment;
  • Experience with various biologic modalities;
  • Experience with key bioprocess unit operations such as cell culture, purification and filling;
  • Strong English language skills, both written and oral;
  • Ability to tailor communication styles to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization;
  • Good interpersonal skills including communication, listening, verbal skills and assertiveness;
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and work in cross‑functional teams as a collaborative team player capable of working well with people across all hierarchies;
  • Willingness to execute projects at remote locations with up to 25% travel and to flex work hours to accommodate global project team members.
Preferred Qualifications
  • BS with 10+ years of relevant experience within the Biopharma industry;
  • MS with 6+ years of relevant experience within the Biopharma industry;
  • PhD with 4+ years of relevant experience within the Biopharma industry.
Location and Compensation

Primary location:
Berkeley, CA;
Relocation assistance may be offered.

Employees can expect to be paid a salary between $128,000 - $192,000. Additional compensation may include a bonus or commission (if relevant). Additional benefits include health care, vision, dental, retirement, PTO, sick leave, etc.
