Job Overview

At the University of California, Berkeley, the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences (EECS) seeks a mid- to senior-career engineer with substantial hands‑on experience in electronics, instrumentation, and lab systems support. The Associate Development Engineer will be responsible for ensuring that instructional labs are safe, reliable, and fully operational.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide full range of professional engineering services across all instructional labs, including design, setup, testing, and maintenance of experimental systems used in electronics, controls, robotics, RF, and autonomous systems.
  • Partner with faculty, students, and staff during planning, design, and implementation phases of lab projects, ensuring alignment with instructional goals and learning outcomes.
  • Develop firmware and software for microcontrollers and embedded systems, and support hardware–software integration for robotics, drones, and RF systems.
  • Provide technical guidance and training on equipment operation, safety protocols, and best practices in experimental design.
  • Document project progress, outcomes, and technical specifications; monitor equipment performance and implement solutions.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance lab capabilities and stay updated on emerging technologies.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Proven experience providing engineering and technical support within educational or research environments.
  • Strong proficiency with microprocessor development tools (ARM, AVR, PIC, Intel), CAD tools (AutoCAD, Solid Works), and other electrical engineering technologies.
  • Excellent problem‑solving, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Experience in instructional labs covering electronics, controls, robotics, RF systems, or related disciplines.
  • 7+ years of relevant engineering and technical support experience.
Salary & Benefits

The budgeted salary range is $88,900 to $126,400 yearly, with a full salary range of $88,900 to $163,900 yearly. This 100% FTE career position is eligible for full benefits, is FLSA exempt, and is paid monthly.
