Associate Transportation Engineer

The City of Berkeley invites you to apply for the position of Associate Transportation Engineer in the Public Works Department! The current vacancy is assigned to the Measure FF group within the Public Works Department and will function as a project manager and technical lead in the transportation engineering field to deliver a wide variety of capital improvement projects. Some key responsibilities include:

  • Manage consultant teams through all phases of project development, including planning, concept development, public outreach and engagement, detailed design, bid and award, and construction. This includes scope development; task coordination; technical review of deliverables including plans, specifications, and engineer's estimates; schedule oversight; and quality management.
  • Ensure compliance with City policies guidance, engineering standards and codes, MUTCD, Caltrans guidance, ADA/PROWAG, NACTO, and Vision Zero principles.
  • Coordinate with various City departments and divisions to share knowledge of ongoing programs and pursue opportunities to deliver Measure FF work more efficiently.
  • Oversee construction management and inspection consultants and perform project implementation and field coordination, working closely with City Engineering and Transportation Divisions, other City departments, external contractors, and utility partners to ensure successful construction, installation, and close-out of Measure FF improvement projects.
  • Serve as project leader for administrative and technical work, and ensure projects meet Measure FF budget and performance expectations through cost estimating, budgeting, resource planning, and contributing to capital planning, reporting, and accountability requirements tied to the ballot measure.
  • Perform additional transportation engineering assignments as needed to support the Transportation and/or Engineering Divisions, including support for council requests, coordination on citywide multimodal and safety initiatives, and coordination with sidewalk repair program.

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university with major course work in civil or traffic engineering and three years of increasingly responsible traffic engineering experience, one year of which was at a level equivalent to the Assistant Transportation Engineer class. Other requirements include possession of a valid California Registration as a professional Traffic Engineer or a professional Civil Engineer as well as a valid California driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.

Progressively responsible related experience may be substituted for the college course work on a year for year basis. A master's degree in Transportation Engineering/Planning or a related field is desirable.

    • First Administrative Review will be conducted on August 3, 2026

The examination process and dates are subject to change. The City may, without notice, change or eliminate any assessment component as needs dictate.
