Sustaining Mechanical Engineer – Test Infrastructure
$57.00 to $82.50 per hour
Role OverviewWe are looking for a Sustaining Mechanical Engineer to manage, refine, and uphold the sophisticated testing infrastructure essential for validating cutting-edge energy systems. Your primary objective is to ensure that our high-fidelity mechanical test platforms remain dependable, functional, and accurate to real-world operational environments. By diagnosing equipment challenges, uncovering underlying issues, and enhancing overall system efficiency, you will collaborate with cross-functional engineering and testing groups to guarantee the integrity of data throughout the product development cycle.
Your work will center on supporting test setups that include fluid management, thermal regulation, air handling, and various mechanical assemblies used to assess modules, cells, and full-scale systems.
- Identify and rectify mechanical malfunctions within intricate testing apparatus and platforms.
- Conduct comprehensive root cause investigations for systems encompassing HVAC, fluid dynamics, thermal management, and associated hardware.
- Coordinate with Test and Design Engineering departments to convert testing specifications into robust mechanical infrastructure and hardware.
- Help maximize test stand availability by partnering with technicians to address equipment failures promptly.
- Coordinate with electrical and controls engineers to facilitate the integration of data acquisition hardware, actuators, and sensors.
- Enhance system reliability and operational stability by tracking performance metrics and identifying upgrade paths.
- Ensure test equipment accurately mirrors intended operating conditions to bolster validation outcomes.
- Manage and update technical documentation, including BOMs, CAD designs, and standard operating procedures.
- Record all maintenance activities, corrective measures, and findings from root cause analyses.
- Minimize technical debt by proactively identifying and resolving weaknesses in current test infrastructure.
- Contribute to ongoing optimization initiatives aimed at improving mechanical systems and test equipment.
- Promote a culture of safety by strictly adhering to protocols when operating pressurized, thermal, chemical, or high-power systems.
- Bachelor or Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field.
- Minimum of five years of professional experience in mechanical design, sustaining engineering, or test equipment development.
- Proficiency in utilizing Solid Works or equivalent mechanical CAD software.
- Proven track record in the maintenance and troubleshooting of sophisticated mechanical systems.
- Background working within production, testing, or manufacturing engineering settings.
- Experience in the design or support of production-grade test fixtures, tools, or equipment.
- Knowledge of mechanical systems such as fans, pumps, airflow, thermal management, and fluid circuits.
- Demonstrated ability to integrate sensors into electromechanical systems.
- Familiarity with safety standards and compliance requirements for high-power, chemical, or pressurized environments.
- Advanced capabilities in problem-solving and conducting root cause analysis.
- Capacity to maintain technical rigor and safety standards while troubleshooting equipment under pressure.
- Strong interpersonal skills to facilitate effective collaboration across electrical, mechanical, and test engineering teams.
- Background in supporting energy storage, battery, or complex electromechanical power systems.
- Familiarity with data acquisition systems or automated testing hardware.
- Experience working with pneumatic, fluid, or thermal air-handling systems.
