Responsibilities

OVERVIEW:
As a seasoned, experienced financial service professional, the incumbent serves as a central subject matter expert and operational lead for the entire Haas School of Business. Applying a deep understanding of industry best practices and UC Berkeley’s complex organizational policies, the role provides oversight and control for school-wide financial transactions.

The incumbent is responsible for resolving a wide range of diverse operational issues by evaluating multiple factors and exercising high-level judgment to implement effective solutions. A critical component of this role is educating and developing Haas staff to ensure full alignment with ongoing campus policy and procedure changes, acting as the primary resource for translating university-wide updates into school-wide operational excellence.

  • Provides guidance to less experienced team members on financial processing functions which may include accounts payable, accounts receivable, purchasing, recharge billing, travel/entertainment, gift accounting, cashiering and collections.
  • Helps train staff and creates effective teamwork environment.
  • Reviews and approves financial data and transactions.
  • Applies financial services concepts (i.e., accounting, accounts receivable, accounts payable, purchasing, collections and billing), to resolve issues, and prepare business process procedures and policy recommendations.
  • Recommends and implements quality customer service standards and procedures to affect various constituencies, including internal department, students and external vendors. Interprets related policies and advises customers accordingly.
  • Responsible for providing reports and analyses for varied and complex budgetary, financial and resource projects; including FP&A.
  • Assesses and recommends to management changes as needed to ensure financial processes maintain compliance with federal and state requirements and internal financial / audit policies.
  • Provides analyses for complex summaries and proposals relative to a diverse range of topics to include new financial procedures and / or services, changes in legal regulations, tax implications, etc.
  • Participates in moderately complex audits of processes and recommends changes to processes. Ensures that the appropriate internal controls are addressed, maintained and strengthened to protect University resources.
  • Documents procedures for financial activities.

Required Qualifications
  • Thorough knowledge of financial processes, policies and procedures.
  • Thorough knowledge of financial data management and reporting systems.
  • Strong proficiency in the use of spreadsheet and database software.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, analytical skills, service orientation, active listening, critical thinking, attention to detail, ability to multi-task in a high volume environment, organizational skills, effective verbal and written communication skills, sound judgment and decision making; ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.
  • Ability to function effectively as a member of a team.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of internal control practices and their impact on protecting University resources.
  • Leadership skills to provide guidance, coaching and mentoring to professional and support staff.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
