Departmental Overview

The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics consists of approximately 300 staff members and coaches; we sponsor 30 varsity sports programs. These 30 programs include more than 850 student‑athletes who participate in our sports programs annually within the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA).

Position Summary

Involves providing intercollegiate athletes with injury prevention training, and evaluation, management and rehabilitation of athletic injuries and peak performance training.

Responsibilities
  • Provides athletes/patients with advanced functional movement and performance enhancement training to improve function, avoid injuries and/or recover safely.
  • Oversees administration of first‑aid to athletes.
  • Provides advanced manual therapy applicable to orthopedic and sports medicine.
  • Screens and refers injured athletes to athletic team physician or other medical services.
  • Supervision of Sports Medicine staff assigned to football.
  • Employee is responsible for the following HR functions of the unit, such as performance management, supervision, disciplinary actions, quality control, etc.
  • Reports injuries, completing appropriate documentation, and maintenance of medical charts.
  • Maintains discretion and confidentiality and handle sensitive matters involving athletic injuries and treatment.
  • Provides oversight and enforcement of safety procedures.
  • May maintain athletic training facilities and equipment, ensuring all athletic equipment is fully operational and training.
  • Provides guidance to athletic trainers for rehabilitation at all levels of athletic injury.
  • Serves as a resource on advanced therapeutic exercise programs and modalities.
  • Other duties as assigned, including professional development.
Required Qualifications
  • Computer skills in programs relevant to job duties.
  • Advanced knowledge of athletic injury prevention and the administration of therapeutic modalities, devices and techniques as well as first‑aid, athletic equipment and injury assessment and treatment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion in handling sensitive matters involving athletic injuries and treatment.
  • Advanced knowledge of electronic medical records systems.
  • For positions associated with Sports Medicine, must maintain current knowledge of applicable rules and standards of the affiliated athletic conference, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) or National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), as well as other associations and agencies to which the campus adheres, and, at all times, avoid any and all violations of these rules and standards.
  • Advanced ability to work in a collaborative manner and to organize and prioritize work assignments, conduct analysis relating to programs and operational procedures and develop resulting recommendations.
  • Advanced skills necessary to communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Advanced knowledge of procurement function and campus budget requirements relating to athletic equipment and supplies.
  • Advanced ability to organize and prioritize work assignments of self and others to ensure completion of assignments within required timelines.
  • Advanced organizational and interpersonal skills needed to work with a variety of client groups.
  • Advanced manual therapy skills applicable to orthopedics and sports medicine.
  • Computer skills in programs relevant to job duties.
