Departmental Overview

The Department of Neuroscience, which launched in July 2024, will advance the understanding of brain, mind, and behavior through research, education and training. Our faculty, graduate and undergraduate students, and postdoctoral researchers study how the brain functions in health and disease, how it generates behavior and thought, and how it computes. We investigate the nervous system on levels ranging from molecules and cells to neural circuits and systems to behavior and cognition to neural computation.

We also develop neurotechnology and explore the impacts of neuroscience on society.

Position Summary

The purpose of the position is to assist the Tsao lab with experiments and lab management. The lab assistant helps with our ongoing experiments (in particular, animal training) and lab management (ordering supplies, organizing the lab).

Responsibilities
  • Train animals using positive reinforcement techniques.
  • Assist with fMRI experiments including operation of MR scanner.
  • Keep inventory of supplies and order new supplies as needed.
  • Sterilize equipment, prepare for and clean up after surgeries, organize lab spaces and prepare lab for inspections.
Required Qualifications
  • Basic experience supporting laboratory research, including assisting with experimental procedures and following established protocols.
  • Experience or familiarity with laboratory animal care and handling, and the ability to follow animal care and research compliance guidelines.
  • Ability to maintain organized laboratory operations, including tracking inventory, ordering supplies, and preparing equipment and lab spaces for research activities.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow written and verbal instructions while working both independently and as part of a research team.

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs.

It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted hourly rate that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $26.22 (Step
1).

  • This is a full‑time (40 hours/week), career position that is eligible for UC Benefits.
  • This is a non‑exempt, biweekly‑paid position.
