Storage Systems Group Leader – Berkeley Lab (National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center, NERSC)

NERSC’s mission is to accelerate scientific discovery through high‑performance computing and data analysis for the DOE Office of Science. The Storage Systems Group (SSG) Lead will develop and execute NERSC’s storage strategy, overseeing a portfolio of parallel file systems, hierarchical storage management, and archival systems that support more than 11,000 users.

Responsibilities
  • Develop NERSC’s storage strategy based on the systems roadmap, science workflows, and user needs.
  • Lead a team that procures, installs, manages, and supports NERSC’s large‑scale storage systems, including 24/7 operational support.
  • Ensure storage systems meet the performance, availability, and usability requirements of NERSC users.
  • Diagnose and resolve storage issues, develop and implement workarounds or patches for software bugs.
  • Provide line management for approximately ten Computer Systems Engineers, hiring, coaching, and fostering career growth.
  • Drive technical leadership for deployment improvements that enhance automation, reliability, stability, usability, performance, and security.
  • Continuously evaluate new storage technologies and recommend future strategy, including parallel and hierarchical storage, to enhance HPC performance and usability.
  • Collaborate with other NERSC teams to enable large‑scale simulation, data analysis, and AI applications on supercomputing and storage systems.
  • Provide budgetary input and oversight for NERSC’s storage systems.
  • Lead or collaborate with DOE labs on future storage technologies and multi‑lab storage initiatives.
  • Present at conferences and talks to promote NERSC to national labs and HPC sites.
  • Create and develop a vision and strategy for the group, contributing as a key member of NERSC’s management team.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Computational Science (or related field) and a minimum of 3 years of managerial experience with complex computer, storage, or networking systems.
  • Experience with Linux storage technologies:
    Infini Band, RoCE, SAN/NAS, NFS, pNFS, HPSS, Lustre, Storage Scale, VAST, and object stores.
  • Prior experience with HPC applications, workflows, and computational storage systems.
  • Experience managing and supporting a 24/7 IT environment.
  • Ability to mentor staff and grow their technical capabilities.
  • Deep knowledge of parallel file systems, hierarchical storage, distributed storage, and storage networking.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively on large projects and contribute to an active intellectual environment.
  • Skill in gathering user requirements and translating them into system characteristics.
  • Strong technical collaboration skills and the ability to develop innovative solutions to meet diverse user needs.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Desired Skills / Knowledge
  • Master’s or PhD degree in a related field.
  • Knowledge of object storage and non‑volatile storage technologies.
  • Experience administering and deploying storage systems at tens of petabytes scale in an HPC environment.

  • Salary Range: $203,496 – $248,736 (equivalent to $180,876 – $305,268 full salary). Includes education, certifications, and experience.

  • Work Modality: Substantial on‑site presence required; hybrid schedules possible. Must reside within 150 mi of Berkeley Lab, CA.
