Overview

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is hiring a Data Science Engineer within the Scientific Data division. The Computational Biosciences Group has an opening for a software and data engineer (CSE2) in multi-modal data modeling and analysis with applications to bioscience research. You will develop methods and software tools that enable scientific knowledge discovery using modern data management and machine learning technologies and advance data-intensive analysis.

Projects focus on omics/structural biology data and neurophysiology data. You will join a multidisciplinary team conducting R&D in FAIR data science, AI, and modern data-understanding methods.

You will be working as part of a team of computer scientists, data scientists, and bioinformaticians.

Responsibilities
  • Design and develop user-friendly software packages for scientific data analysis and management
  • Develop machine learning and AI solutions for analysis of biological data in collaboration with scientists
  • Collaborate with domain experts to develop FAIR data models and management solutions for bioscience applications
  • Engage with communities of Neurodata Without Borders and LinkML open source data ecosystems, as well as the Joint Genome Institute
  • Maintain and manage open source software products, including development priorities, releases, CI, and testing
  • Design, implement and maintain software tools for creating and running parallel, data-intensive analysis workflows
  • Design, implement and maintain high-performance computing and cloud solutions for visualization and analysis of complex biological data
  • Train scientists and research software engineers in the use of the software products at workshops and conferences
  • Address problems of diverse scope requiring evaluation of identifiable factors and demonstrate good judgment in method selection
  • Network with senior internal and external personnel in their area of expertise
Qualifications
  • Typically requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree in computer science, data science, machine learning, bioinformatics, or equivalent; or 3 years with a Master’s degree; or equivalent work experience in designing and developing software for data modeling or analysis
  • Experience developing complex software solutions
  • Experience testing large code bases
  • Experience contributing to community-driven open source software
  • Demonstrated experience in machine learning, data management, or scientific data analysis
  • Works well in a collaborative team environment
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, C++, or Java Script
  • Experience with Git and continuous integration systems (Git Hub, Git Lab)
  • Ability to troubleshoot and solve problems of diverse scope involving data-driven analysis
  • Ability to network with senior internal and external personnel in their expertise
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Proven ability to work effectively as part of a cross-disciplinary team
Desired Skills/Knowledge
  • Master’s or PhD in Computer Science or related field, with 5+ years of professional experience in scientific data modeling or analysis software
  • Experience with modern scientific data formats and databases (HDF5, Zarr, Mongo

    DB, Postgre

    SQL, MySQL, Redis)
  • Experience with Neurodata Without Borders, LinkML, or similar ecosystems
  • Experience working with large biological data (neurophysiology, microbiology, genomics, protein design)
  • Experience with modern parallel compute technologies (Cloud, HPC, containerization, MPI, OpenMP, CUDA, pthreads)
  • Experience developing web-based GUIs or APIs for scientific data analysis and management

Additional Information
  • Appointment type:
    Full-time, 2-year term with possible extension or conversion based on performance and funding
  • Salary range: $131,760 – $161,064, with full salary range $117,132 – $197,676 depending on skills and experience
