This position reports to the Berkeley Seismological Laboratory and leads data acquisition, monitoring and quality efforts related to geophysical data and systems.
Departmental overviewThe Berkeley Seismological Laboratory (BSL) conducts essential research on earthquakes and solid earth processes while collecting and delivering high-quality geophysical data. It provides real-time earthquake and hazard information to the public in collaboration with partners and enables broad access to earthquake information while educating students at all levels. BSL operates a network of seismic and geodetic stations, DAS systems, and real-time data streaming and processing.
The lab also operates the MyShake application for public earthquake early warning in the West Coast of the US.
This position is a lead role within the data acquisition, monitoring and quality team.
ResponsibilitiesRequired Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in geophysics, computer science or equivalent experience.
- Advanced knowledge in design, development, testing, deployment, configuration, operation and maintenance of complex geophysical data acquisition, monitoring and quality systems.
- Knowledge of geophysical data and metadata formats, data exchange protocols.
- Experience with state-of-health monitoring tools and alerting solutions, including Nagios, Grafana and time-series databases.
- Experience with containerized and cloud environments.
- Experience with complex system troubleshooting in a multi-platform environment.
- Ability to understand organizational needs and how systems support them; ability to interface with senior-level technical and non-technical management; experience researching and evaluating new technology; experience managing a small technical team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of Python and C++ desirable.
- Knowledge of IP networking and IP routing desirable.
