This position reports to the Berkeley Seismological Laboratory and leads data acquisition, monitoring and quality efforts related to geophysical data and systems.

Departmental overview

The Berkeley Seismological Laboratory (BSL) conducts essential research on earthquakes and solid earth processes while collecting and delivering high-quality geophysical data. It provides real-time earthquake and hazard information to the public in collaboration with partners and enables broad access to earthquake information while educating students at all levels. BSL operates a network of seismic and geodetic stations, DAS systems, and real-time data streaming and processing.

The lab also operates the MyShake application for public earthquake early warning in the West Coast of the US.

This position is a lead role within the data acquisition, monitoring and quality team.

Responsibilities
  • Plans, designs, integrates, develops, tests, deploys, configures, operates, maintains and documents advanced geophysical data acquisition and quality systems (e.g., seismic, geodetic, DAS) including cloud and containerized environments. Addresses integration issues with state and national partners. Develops software components to achieve integrated implementations and builds distributed data-processing architectures in scalable cloud environments. Leads complex integration efforts to ensure interoperability and real-time data flow.
  • Plans, designs, integrates, develops, tests, deploys, configures, operates, maintains and documents advanced state-of-health monitoring and alerting tools across multiple systems. Monitors real-time performance of geophysical stations, telemetry, acquisition systems, data timeliness, and quality. Implements corrective actions and drafts performance/operational reports for stakeholders. Opens and follows up on tickets when issues cannot be solved within the team.
  • Manages and maintains configuration of geophysical stations, data and metadata through tools such as SIS, Net Box and Next Cloud. Tests new data before production, leads technical collaboration teams, renews permits for remote infrastructures, and supervises testing and acceptance of new equipment at remote stations.
  • Leads the team responsible for geophysical data acquisition, monitoring and quality systems, defining roles, providing technical guidance, and ensuring timelines and performance assessments. Collaborates with external partners to ensure compatibility and operational readiness. Produces and maintains detailed documentation for architectures, data flows, configuration and procedures. Contributes expertise to cross-functional engineering and research teams.
  • Analyses and assesses potential new solutions for data acquisition, data quality, monitoring and alerting (including machine-learning components). Evaluates and leads implementation changes or new systems in coordination with internal and external partners.
  • Supervises management of source code and system configuration within the team. Establishes CI/CD infrastructures, build environments, version control and automated testing. Develops and maintains automated build processes and documentation; diagnoses performance issues and conducts root-cause analysis across interconnected components.
  • Qualifications

    Required Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in geophysics, computer science or equivalent experience.
    • Advanced knowledge in design, development, testing, deployment, configuration, operation and maintenance of complex geophysical data acquisition, monitoring and quality systems.
    • Knowledge of geophysical data and metadata formats, data exchange protocols.
    • Experience with state-of-health monitoring tools and alerting solutions, including Nagios, Grafana and time-series databases.
    • Experience with containerized and cloud environments.
    • Experience with complex system troubleshooting in a multi-platform environment.
    • Ability to understand organizational needs and how systems support them; ability to interface with senior-level technical and non-technical management; experience researching and evaluating new technology; experience managing a small technical team.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Knowledge of Python and C++ desirable.
    • Knowledge of IP networking and IP routing desirable.
