Overview

The Infrastructure Services unit brings together and integrates the engineering and implementation of core, foundational campus IT infrastructure, delivering essential IT services that support UC Berkeley’s continually evolving needs.

Position Summary

Maintaining centralized data storage facilities for enterprise servers and other campus computer systems is a core activity of Data and Platform Services (DPS) in Berkeley IT, Campus IT Infrastructure (CITI). The Storage System Administrator is responsible for the Storage Area Network (SAN) infrastructure, Network Attached Storage (NAS), Object and cloud storage and all components needed to run these environments, including backup/recovery services.

The role involves planning and implementing installations and upgrades, developing and applying data storage and protection policies, and providing assistance and problem resolution for system administrators and customers.

Responsibilities
  • Researches and implements systems, services, and technology solutions to support the Enterprise Storage systems and services, including UCBackup software and environment.
  • Implements system or device enhancements such as software, hardware, and network configuration updates, and installations for projects of moderate complexity.
  • Supports storage services through scripting, automation, testing on various physical devices, and deployment into production.
  • Manages centralized servers and makes recommendations for purchase or upgrade of new computer/storage related hardware.
  • Manages service requests and incidents related to storage services and backup services, providing customer service and identifying areas for improvement.
  • Conducts systems programming and support activities and tasks.
  • Participates in professional development and training.
Required Qualifications
  • Self‑motivated, works independently and as part of a team, demonstrates problem‑solving skills, learns effectively, and meets deadlines.
  • Writes technical documentation clearly and concisely.
  • Understands system performance monitoring and actions to improve or correct performance.
  • Knows cybersecurity best practices (firewalls, certificates, etc.).
  • Knows NFS, SMB, iSCSI, and Object (S3) storage best practices.
  • Knows Fibre Channel Network technologies (Brocade switching, SANnav, etc.).
  • Supports VMware infrastructure for storage.
  • Has basic TCP/IP networking skills.
  • Familiar with storage technologies such as Net App, Cloudian, Loadbalancer.org, Brocade SANnav, Hitachi, Wasabi, and Pure arrays.
  • Knows enterprise backup software such as Commvault, Cohesity, and Veeam.
  • Designs, develops, and applies technology and systems to meet business needs.
  • Adapt equipment and technology to serve user needs.
  • Understands how system management actions affect other systems, users, and dependent functions.
  • Communicates technical information clearly across the organization at varying levels.
  • Identifies and resolves problems effectively.
  • Designs, sets up, operates, and corrects malfunctions involving enterprise storage and backup technology systems.
  • Knows on‑prem and cloud storage solutions (AWS, Azure, and GCP).
  • Has basic scripting knowledge.
  • Has knowledge in other IT areas such as Linux, Windows, and project management.
Preferred Qualifications
  • General knowledge of ITIL Foundations and all functional areas of a large IT organization.
