Departmental Overview

UC Berkeley has launched a Digital Accessibility Program to ensure that the deployment of information technology has been designed, developed and procured to be accessible to people with disabilities, including those who use assistive technologies. The program and its many components have been established in collaboration between Berkeley IT and the Office of Disability Access and Compliance. The Digital Accessibility Specialist will join a team within Berkeley Information Technology, and is responsible for assisting with the assessment and remediation planning and tracking of digital accessibility, developing and/or identifying training resources, offering training, and tracking support and reporting on activities.

Historically, Berkeley has played a central role as the home of the independent living civil rights action and the civil rights movement. The team in which this role reports is doing 21st century civil rights work, and we seek individuals who can help Berkeley accomplish this critical work. The position is a highly collaborative one who engages with individuals and teams across Berkeley IT, Disability Access and Compliance, and many key stakeholders on campus including academic and administrative department personnel.

The position involves auditing digital content and systems, creating plans for individuals and departments to improve their digital presence and meet web accessibility standards, providing quality assurance testing, developing training materials and workshops, and holding consultation office hours, while tracking and reporting on status and data related to these activities. The person in this position will keep abreast of new developments with key standards such as the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0, 2.1, 2.2, WAI-ARIA 1.2, and other applicable W3C standards.

They will use their knowledge of such standards and frameworks to guide and support their daily work.

Responsibilities

Analysis and evaluation of digital content and systems:

  • Applies technical expertise and business analysis concepts to identify, evaluate and develop remediation plans for the accessibility of digital content, with an understanding of applicable business practices, processes, systems and industry standards to meet accessibility requirements.
  • Works with digital content authors and managers to plan and execute integration and quality assurance testing for accessibility.
  • Provides accessibility assessments of digital assets including videos, PDFs, presentation applications, Word, as well as content within web sites, content management systems and learning management systems.

Applies organizational policies and procedures, and industry best practices for accessibility evaluation and remediation:

  • Understands and applies WCAG 2.1 AA standards, techniques and best practices and University of California and UC Berkeley policies and procedures to assist with the assessment and remediation of digital content including audio, video, web sites and within content within Content Management Systems and Learning Management Systems.
  • Leverages knowledge of HTML/XHTML, CSS, Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0, 2.1, 2.2 standards, and other applicable W3C standards in support of the remediation of existing digital content or the design of new digital content.
  • Applies guidelines and information within standards, policies, and frameworks to guide and support the daily work.
  • Recommends and implements changes in processes and procedures as needed.

Accessibility training and awareness:

  • Develops new and curates and/or refines existing training resources and delivers synchronous and on-demand training opportunities and materials related to techniques and practices for producing accessible digital content.
