Salary range: The UC academic salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step  the following table for the current scale for this position T38B A reasonable full-time salary estimate for this position is $100,400-$131,200.

Percent time: 100%

Anticipated start: Fall 2026

Position duration: The initial appointment is for two years with the possibility of an extension based on performance and the availability of funding.

Position description

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley, seeks an Assistant/Associate Project Scientist to work with Professor Kenichi Soga on performance-based monitoring and risk assessment tool of lifeline infrastructure systems as part of research projects funded by the California Energy Commission, Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and East Bay Municipal Utility District in Professor Kenichi Soga's lab entitled “Center for Smart Infrastructure”.

In particular, the project scientist will work on a ground hazard risk assessment framework using embedded sensor systems for energy and water infrastructure systems as well as its implementation under the guidance of Professor Soga. The outcome of the research will serve the infrastructure engineering community, leveraging real-time monitoring technologies to reduce construction and operational costs.

The position will involve

  • Conducting laboratory and field experiments in the area of infrastructure sensing, such as distributed fiber optic sensors and wireless sensor network
  • Analyzing data obtained from the experiments
  • Writing reports from the investigation
  • Organizing meetings with the funding agencies
  • Tracking and managing the day-to-day operation of the Berkeley Center for Smart Infrastructure.

Qualifications Basic qualifications

PhD (or equivalent international degree)

Preferred qualifications
  • PhD in Civil Engineering.
  • Experience developing and applying sensor systems for infrastructure monitoring.
  • Experience conceptualizing and proving concept for data-centric performance based operation of infrastructure systems.
