Departmental OverviewResearch, Teaching, and Learning (RTL) provides support, documentation, and training for a portfolio of campus-wide technology services in support of teaching and learning at UC Berkeley. The service portfolio includes classroom technology services supporting the campus, including the Classroom Technology Support Helpdesk, Instructional Equipment Checkout, Specialized Auditorium Support, Active Learning Classroom Support, and Instructional Computing Classrooms.
Position SummaryThe Classroom Technology Installation Technician performs troubleshooting, maintenance, and installation of a wide variety of portable and educational technology equipment on campus in the support of teaching and learning. This position carries out systematic efforts to sustain the AV/IT infrastructure in the campus general assignment classrooms.
ResponsibilitiesAV IT Engineering & Classroom Installation - 60%
- Executes the installation, testing, and debugging of moderately complex AV/IT systems in classrooms and learning spaces to ensure full system commissioning. Interprets blueprints, architectural schematics, and functional diagrams to execute specialized projects, including equipment rack wiring, display device mounting, and infrastructure modifications. Collaborates with the Design and Engineering team to integrate new instructional technology subsystems into existing campus IT infrastructures. Verifies that specific phases or components of system designs are installed to plan specifications and communicates assessments (with suggested remediation, if needed) to clients.
Specialized Technical Support - 25%
- Performs advanced troubleshooting and repair of analog and digital electronic components, control systems, and data transmission systems in instructional spaces. Utilizes measurement equipment to adjust and calibrate media equipment according to design specifications. Provides guidance and solutions to staff, faculty and students for the correct operation of equipment and video-data display in lecture halls and classrooms.
Process Improvement, Documentation, and Collaborative Projects - 10%
- Participates as a member of cross-functional service improvement project teams to identify, evaluate, and develop complex systems and procedures. Participates in product research to identify emerging trends in hardware and software Assists in reviewing and estimating schedules and design costs, including equipment, installation, labor, and materials. Authors and maintains knowledge base documentation and staff-facing training materials to ensure consistent support and operational efficiency.
