Sr. Custodian, Per Diem (5099C), Facilities Services – #82892 – University of California, Berkeley

We are looking for an experienced custodian who can provide high‑quality cleaning services across the UC Berkeley campus, including maintenance of offices, laboratories, lounges, and outdoor spaces. As a Per Diem Senior Custodian, you will support staff coverage during absences and special events, ensuring a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for our community.

Responsibilities
  • Provide quality customer service during each interaction with internal and external customers.
  • Clean and maintain interior and exterior campus facilities including offices, lounges, student common areas, laboratories, hallways, stairwells, walkways, terraces, balconies, trash, kitchenettes, and isolating areas.
  • Dust, wipe, and clean moldings, windowsills, handrails, door tracks, radiators, furniture, inside windows (all floors), and outside windows (ground floor).
  • Sweep, mop, and clean floors and stairwells; perform floor stripping or scrubbing with buffers or auto scrubbers as required.
  • Vacuum, shampoo, and spot‑clean rugs, carpets, and other materials.
  • Polish furniture and clean kitchen appliances.
  • Clean, disinfect restrooms, sinks, fixtures, shower stalls, urinals, toilets, mirrors, frames, shelves, windows, lockers, ceilings, light covers, and vents.
  • Restock paper products and soap; pick up trash and debris and empty wastebaskets.
  • Address leaks and flood debris with wet‑vacuum removal; remove and transfer compost and recycling items to central locations.
  • Clear minor drain stoppages; report damage and maintenance repair needs.
  • Perform basic maintenance and safety inspections of custodial equipment; set up, operate, and dismantle cleaning equipment.
  • Secure and secure areas as required, following building and institutional procedures.
  • Adhere to university safety guidelines, attend required training, and maintain personal protective equipment.
  • Perform event set‑ups, including moving, setting up, and taking down tables and chairs, and cleaning rooms.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision and maintain professional, customer‑friendly conduct.
Required Qualifications
  • At least 6 months of professional custodian experience.
  • Knowledge of cleaning products and methods suitable for tile, wood, cement, and carpet surfaces.
  • Proficiency in safe work practices, PPE use, and SDS sheet interpretation.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lb. and move up to 100 lb.
  • Understanding of security procedures for unlocking, locking, securing buildings, and key handling.
  • Basic English skills for reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
  • Ability to comprehend technical and safety documentation and follow instructions.
  • Strong communication skills; ability to convey information clearly in person or via radio.
  • Basic awareness of university mission and operational needs.
  • Experience working in isolated or high‑traffic areas with minimal supervision.
  • Problem‑solving skills and ability to prioritize tasks and complete goals.
  • Maintain respectful, professional, customer‑friendly behavior.
  • Excellent customer service skills, including taking requests courteously and following through.
  • Teamwork capability.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in a college/university, hotel, hospital, or property‑management setting.

Salary & Benefits

Hourly rate: $25.42 (Step 1). The position is Per Diem, non‑exempt, biweekly‑paid, and not eligible for UC benefits.
