Departmental Overview

The Innovative Genomics Institute (IGI) is a joint effort between UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco, with affiliates at several other institutions. IGI’s interdisciplinary scientists conduct world‑class research, using genome engineering to treat human diseases, end hunger, and respond to climate change. The institute also advances public understanding of genome engineering, provides resources for the broader community, and guides ethical use of these technologies.

Position

Summary

Reporting to the IGI Director for Therapeutic R&D, this role provides operational leadership and high‑level program management for IGI CRISPR Cures projects. The position serves as a strategist and principal operational lead, driving the design, coordination, and implementation of the program. It requires independent judgment in developing and executing complex, multi‑institutional project strategies and aligning scientific, administrative, and compliance objectives across campuses.

The role develops and oversees operational and policy frameworks that enable sustained collaboration, shared resource management, and timely achievement of project milestones.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the strategic analysis of research performance across projects, ensuring alignment with approved project plans and institutional goals.
  • Partner with the Director of IGI CRISPR Cures projects and workstream leads to establish, evaluate, and refine robust performance metrics.
  • Design and implement program‑wide operational frameworks and ways of work that ensure efficiency, accountability, and harmonization across academic and industry partners.
  • Serve as a senior integrator and liaison across UC and industry stakeholders, ensuring seamless alignment of all work streams with IGI CRISPR Cures project objectives.
  • Coordinate strategic collaboration and issue resolution among UC Berkeley, UC San Francisco, and other partners.
  • Facilitate high‑level governance processes and oversee the cadence, structure, and content of recurring cross‑institutional communications and collaborations.
  • Provide high‑level oversight and analysis of a substantial multi‑institutional budget, guiding strategic allocation of program resources across teams and campuses.
  • Partner with workstream leads and HR to assess staffing needs, spending patterns, and long‑term resource planning.
  • Develop and advise on financial strategies that ensure optimal alignment of programmatic and fiscal goals in a complex, multi‑sponsor funding environment.
  • Synthesize and interpret complex technical and operational data from all participating campuses for strategic reporting.
  • Conduct program‑level analyses and lead continuous improvement of project management systems and processes.
  • Provide executive‑level guidance to the PI, ensuring decision‑making is informed by accurate financial, operational, and performance data.
  • Oversee the preparation and interpretation of monthly and quarterly financial reports and ensure precise linkage of expenditures to milestones and deliverables across the two clinic‑bound projects.
Required Qualifications
  • Advanced knowledge of common organizational or research‑specific computer application programs.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with all levels of staff and influence, both verbally and in writing.
