The College of Engineering at UC Berkeley is recognized for its educational and research excellence and is currently ranked #2 for undergraduate engineering in the United States. The college comprises seven departments and numerous research centers spanning nanotechnology, computer science, energy, health care technologies, the environment, and more. The College Development team supports private fundraising efforts, engaging alumni, friends, students, foundations, and corporate partners, and regularly secures substantial private gifts.
PositionSummary
The Senior Director of Development identifies, cultivates, solicits, and structures major and special gifts from individuals (commits of $500,000 or more). The role involves managing a portfolio and collaborating with College leadership to maximize giving. The Senior Director develops and implements tailored plans for a portfolio of prospects and donors and reports to the Executive Director of Development.
Responsibilities- Lead development professional responsible for identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major gift prospects. Maintain a portfolio of 75-100 major donor prospects, with capacity to give $500,000 or more. Raise at least $4.5 million per year and conduct at least 10 in-person or virtual visits per month.
- Design and implement specialized program activities, including new fundraising strategies and proposals. Analyze needs and develop fundraising and advancement strategies.
- Develop, write, and evaluate strategies for cultivation and direct solicitation of major gifts. Present formal fundraising proposals to major donors and prospects or prepare senior management to present proposals.
- Serve as a resource for assigned areas of expertise, interacting with prospects, donors, staff, and outside professionals to provide information and counsel on specialized programs.
- Create and evaluate methods for building/maintaining prospect and volunteer constituencies; identify, recruit, and direct high-level volunteers.
- Perform special projects and other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor's degree in a related area or equivalent experience/training.
- Expert knowledge of the location and higher education ecosystem, including campus concerns, mission, goals, objectives, achievements, and infrastructure.
- Expert knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, and policies.
- Expert written and interpersonal communication skills, including political acumen, to establish and maintain relationships across the organization and with outside constituencies.
- Expert ability to present persuasive goals/objectives for securing gifts.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and project/program management skills, including budgeting and time management.

The budgeted salary range for this position is $124,700 to $182,800 yearly. This is a 100% FTE career position eligible for full benefits. This position is FLSA Exempt and paid monthly.
