DepartmentalOverview
The UC Berkeley Student Union is a department within the Division of Student Affairs and serves as the administrative and advising support arm of the Associated Students of the University of California Student Government. It provides services and programs that foster experiential learning and support a sustainable organization. The Student Union Facilities Maintenance & Operations (SUFMO) manages multiple facilities, including the MLK Jr.
Student Union, Eshleman Hall, Anthony Hall, and Anna Head Alumnae Hall.
Oversee building‑related services and ensure the safety and security of occupants, visitors, and event venues within the UC Berkeley Student Union. Manage safety protocols, coordinate maintenance, supervise staff, and address operational issues while delivering outstanding customer service.
Responsibilities- Support building operations and act as Building Coordinator for emergency preparedness, incident response, and de‑escalation. May work day or swing shift hours.
- Assist with oversight of operations, including information desk operations and handling escalated customer service complaints.
- Supervise student staff in the Facilities and Event teams, assign daily duties, and provide support for escalated issues.
- Provide excellent customer service to event clients and building occupants, ensuring smooth events and proper use of building amenities.
- Coordinate, monitor, and track maintenance, custodial, and other service requests for assigned facilities and event spaces.
- Conduct periodic rounds to inspect for security, fire, and accident hazards and report infractions to management.
- Review and execute floor plans for community spaces and event venues in coordination with relevant teams.
- Represent the department on special projects related to facilities, safety committee, emergency committee, and ergonomic program; maintain compliance with OSHA/EHS regulations and implement safety policies.
- Working knowledge of facility maintenance practices and procedures.
- Strong written communication skills for preparing correspondence, reports, policies, and training documents.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines in a stressful environment.
- Active listening, interpersonal communication, and problem‑solving skills to resolve questions, concerns, and issues.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Organizational skills to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines and budget constraints.
- Knowledge of safety and emergency preparedness practices.
- Ability to oversee part‑time student employees, assist with training, and provide corrective instruction.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related area or equivalent experience and training.
Annual salary range: $36.91 (Step 4) – $39.17 (Step 7). This is a non‑exempt, bi‑weekly paid, full‑time (40 hours per week) contract position eligible for full UC benefits.
