Director, Strategic Communications - Men's Basketball

Responsibilities
  • Engage with all members of the men's basketball program to learn student‑athletes' personalities, talents, and abilities; exploit coaches' strengths for public consumption; identify sport influencers and broaden the message; target critical audiences that amplify the sport publicly.
  • Oversee content creation and approval, supporting the media plan across all formats (video, visual, graphic, written, spoken, etc.) and platforms (Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premier, iMovie, etc.).
  • Create, manage, communicate, publish, and revise the media plan, highlighting scheduled flow of information, cadence of messaging, types of required content, intended audiences, and other key factors in publicizing the team.
  • Collaboratively work with content creators, Cal Athletics digital ecosystem directors, fundraisers, and game‑day entertainment employees to synchronize all communication, publicity, and engagement, ensuring alignment with overall strategy.
  • Serve as the main public‑facing resource for the men's basketball program, project‑managing requests, coverage, and alterations to the media plan, while maintaining historical knowledge of the sport.
  • Facilitate required statistical submissions, written notes, or releases specific to the assigned sports.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Advanced knowledge of, or ability to learn about, program activity and best practices.
  • Strong problem‑solving, multitasking, and effective listening skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Proficiency in computer applications relevant to job duties.
  • Creation and execution of sport‑specific storytelling strategy.
  • Development and execution of a media plan including cadence, audiences, mediums, content types, and schedules.
  • Rapid learning of all facets of the sports program (personnel, trends, participants, national landscape, critical audiences).
  • Targeted content creation to recruit and retain individuals to the sport.
  • Ability to thrive in a flexible, fast‑paced, dynamic work environment.
  • Collaboration flexibility to adjust schedules, timelines, content, messaging, mediums, etc., to meet program needs.
  • Proficient use of social media to promote teams and Athletics (Facebook, X, Tik Tok, Instagram, etc.).
  • Knowledge of NCAA/Power 4 landscape, recruiting cycles, NIL trends, and student‑athlete retention drivers.
  • Understanding of news and media communications concepts and principles.
  • Maintained current knowledge of applicable rules and standards of ACC, NCAA, and other agencies, avoiding violations.
  • Leadership skills to oversee strategic storytelling over multiple platforms.
  • Strong time and project management skills; manage multiple projects from concept through completion.
Education / Training
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related area or equivalent experience and training.
Salary & Benefits
  • Compensation range: $105,000 – $115,000 annually.
  • Exempt, monthly‑paid position; full‑time (40 hrs/week); eligible for UC benefits.
  • Eligible for the University of California compensation and benefits package.
Driving Requirement

Must hold a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record; may be required to enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program.
