Head of Computation and Bioinformatics (5229C), CRISPR Cures Core - 85890

Departmental Overview

The Innovative Genomics Institute (IGI) is a non‑profit, academic research organization formed through the partnership of UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco, located on the UC Berkeley campus. IGI accelerates translation of CRISPR‑based approaches to address real‑world problems in human health, agriculture, and climate. IGI values excellence, diversity, and inclusion and seeks candidates who contribute to this mission and who may have had non‑traditional career paths.

Position

Summary

The Bioinformatics Programmer develops and utilizes computational tools to analyze and interpret biological and other research data. The incumbent utilizes algorithms, computational techniques, and statistical methodologies, supports IGI scientists at all levels, implements end‑user database needs, maintains computational pipelines, and provides web‑based bioinformatics resources. The role also includes training staff and contributing to research publications and strategic funding.

Responsibilities
  • Develop new algorithms and bioinformatic pipelines for high‑throughput sequencing data from genome editing experiments.
  • Create processing pipelines that scale to massive dataset sizes.
  • Develop bioinformatic methods broadly applicable to data from diverse genome editing modalities and sequencing platforms, including base editing, prime editing, and homology‑directed repair strategies.
  • Create open‑source bioinformatic software for heterogeneous computing systems and disseminate it for external use.
  • Guide institute members in selecting appropriate bioinformatic analyses.
  • Assist group members with method selection and application across multiple data types, ensuring computational efficiency and data integrity.
  • Apply advanced statistical knowledge to analysis of genome editing experiments and influence wet‑lab protocols that affect downstream bioinformatic choices.
  • Train staff, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers in bioinformatic programming and development.
  • Communicate and train group members, primarily biologists with varying computational experience.
  • Conduct independent and group research aimed at novel biological discoveries.
  • Develop methods that integrate biological and computational knowledge to identify optimal editing strategies for correcting pathogenic mutations.
  • Integrate data from large‑scale screening campaigns using modern data science tools.
  • Author manuscripts for publication and present research at conferences.
  • Produce quality graphics and figures from complex scientific data.
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners on publications and presentations.
  • Develop strategies for integrating data into rules for optimal editing strategies.
  • Evaluate potential off‑target effects of genome editing strategies.
  • Work with executive personnel to define strategic goals for computational programs across research groups and institutes.
  • Manage data access priorities for group members and collaborators.
  • Verify quality, standardization, and provenance of new data.
  • Monitor large volumes of novel sequencing data and ensure standardized processing suitable for the entire group.
  • Ensure new data conforms to robust quality control and is tagged comprehensibly for all lab members.
  • Participate in proposal development and funding requests, providing technical expertise and drafting specific sections.
  • Lead a team of bioinformatics programmers, providing project leadership and oversight of lower‑level staff.
  • Manage project budgets and financial reporting for funded CRISPR Cures programs, delegating reporting to designated project managers.
Required Qualifications
  • Expert knowledge of bioinformatics methods, applications programming, web development, and data structures.
  • Expert understanding of relational databases, web interfaces, and operating systems.
  • Highly developed project management skills.
  • Expert knowledge of modern biology relevant to the field.
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills to work with both technical and non‑technical personnel at all levels.
  • Advanced familiarity with online bioinformatic databases and systems such as NCBI and EMBL ENA.
