Position: Lab Assistant (9603C), Berkeley Public Health - 86017

Lab Assistant (9603C), Berkeley Public Health – 86017

We are looking for an assistant to support Dr. Ashley Wolf’s microbiome research team in the School of Public Health. The lab assistant will provide daily care of research animals in a germ‑free/gnotobiotic facility and assist with experimental protocols related to gut microbiome and infection protection.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain germ‑free mouse colonies and support related experiments.
  • Provide daily care of research animals within the germ‑free/gnotobiotic facility, including flexible film isolator maintenance, cylinder management, sterilization verification, cage cleaning, sanitation, animal monitoring, and sample collection.
  • Perform molecular biology techniques such as DNA isolation, PCR, and sequencing library preparation.
  • Culture and manage bacterial samples according to laboratory protocols.
  • Support laboratory operations: purchasing equipment and reagents, inventory management, and overall organization.
  • Train new employees and trainees in laboratory procedures, mouse handling, and general lab practices.
  • Participate in workshops, trainings, and other professional development activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Strong problem‑solving skills.
  • Effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication and presentation skills.
  • Excellent organizational, administrative, and time‑management skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and cooperate with team members.
  • Demonstrated laboratory research experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience caring for laboratory animals.
Salary & Benefits

Hourly range: $26.22‑$29.73 (Steps 1.0‑4.0). The position is non‑exempt, bi‑weekly paid, 20 hours per week, 1‑year limited (temporary) with full benefits eligibility.
