Position title: Junior Specialist/Assistant Specialist

Salary range: The UC academic salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step  the following table(s) for the current salary scale(s) for this position:(Table 24B). A reasonable full-time salary range estimate for this position is $57,000 to $69,400.

Percent time: 100%

Anticipated start: Summer 2026

Position duration: One year with the possibility of extension based on performance and availability of funding.

The Junior or Assistant Specialist will use molecular biology wet lab techniques to conduct experiments that align with the Gomez Lab's investigation on the molecular and cellular basis of cognitive flexibility.

This position is required to manage a mouse colony, including but not limited to mouse husbandry, genotyping, anesthesia, euthanasia. The Junior/Assistant Specialist will keep a detailed record of genotyping results as well as report weekly to Professor Gomez on progress on projects and assignments. The incumbent will contribute to projects focused on RNA biology. These projects entail retrieving data from previously published RNA seq datasets as well as contributing to Ribo Tag sequencing to assess alternative RNA splicing patterns in select brain cell types.

Collection of brain tissue for immunohistochemistry and confocal imaging of target RNA pathways, and other molecular biology techniques such as western blot is a component of the research scope. At the final stages, the Junior/Assistant Specialist's findings will be included in manuscript drafts for submission to journals, completing validation experiments and revisions as necessary. The Junior/Assistant Specialist will complete the analysis of sequencing data and work with graduate students and postdocs to incorporate alternative splicing profiles into the lab's previously published datasets.

The results of these experiments will elucidate the relationship between changes in alternative splicing following exposure to psychedelics and its downstream effects on the function of the brain.

Lab
