The Department of Integrative Biology studies the evolution of life from molecular, functional, and ecological perspectives. Researchers in integrative biology work on organisms from across the tree of life in laboratories, in the field, and in museums.
The Smiley Lab studies the relationships among global forest change, biodiversity loss, and disease emergence, and how we expect patterns of disease spillover at newly created forest edges to affect human and wildlife health.
Position Summary
The Lab Assistant works on organizing the mountain gorilla biobank and data records at UC Berkeley. The Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project has been operating in Rwanda, Uganda, and the DR Congo for 40 years and has compiled a robust repository of physical specimens and data. This position assists with physical inventory, electronic data records, and the creation of meta-datasets for the mountain gorilla species.

Responsibilities
- Physical specimen inventory
- Electronic data recording
- Data entry into a biobanking electronic system
- Creation of longitudinal datasets
- Reading clinical records to extract data fields for the creation of longitudinal datasets
- General lab duties
Required Qualifications
- Demonstrated attention to detail and the ability to accurately review, record, and organize information.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word, including the ability to enter, track, and maintain data.
- Basic understanding of clinical records and the ability to identify and accurately extract key data elements while maintaining confidentiality.
- Ability to follow established procedures, maintain accurate records, and complete assigned tasks with a high degree of accuracy.
- Ability to organize and prioritize workload to meet established deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Bachelor's degree and/or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Education / Training
- Master's in Public Health and/or equivalent combination of training/education
Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs.
It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The hourly range that the University expects to pay for this position is $27.53-$33.13 (steps 1.0 - 5.5)
- This is a non-exempt, bi-weekly paid position.
- This is a full-time (40 hours/week) Career position eligible for UC benefits.
Other Information
