High Voltage Electrician (8154C), Facilities Services – #85661 Position Overview

The Utilities Maintenance group is responsible for the operation and maintenance of campus utilities (steam, high voltage, natural gas, water, and sewer) distribution. The high voltage electricians operate and maintain the University’s high voltage distribution system, receiving high voltage power from Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) and distributing it throughout the main Berkeley campus.

Responsibilities
  • Inspect, maintain, test, repair, operate, troubleshoot and replace 4160V, 12KV, and 115KV apparatus on all campus sites.
  • Switch high voltage equipment and prepare switching procedures.
  • Maintain high voltage equipment including switches, circuit breakers, transformers, relays, transmission lines, cables, and cable terminations.
  • Perform high voltage relay calibration, cable splicing and terminating.
  • Troubleshoot control systems related to pumps and motors of various voltage supplies.
  • Coordinate repairs and shutdowns with other trades, including PP-CS.
  • Maintain support systems (pumps, streetlights, other electrical systems).
  • Respond to high voltage service calls, assist fire alarm calls and SCADA installations.
  • Administrative duties: consult supervisors, interpret schematics, support maintenance projects, keep accurate work records, serve as liaison, obtain materials.
  • Adhere to safety guidelines, attend safety trainings, maintain OSHA/NEC high voltage training and knowledge of HVPPE and testing procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • California State Electrical License.
  • Completed a five-year electrical apprenticeship or equivalent.
  • Three years of high voltage experience.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and ability to interpret circuitry designs, schematics, and manuals.
  • Knowledge of electrical codes and ability to use correct tools and techniques.
  • Operate electrical machines and tools; work in confined spaces, use ladders, scaffolding, high lifts.
  • Excellent communication skills; ability to interact positively with campus community.
  • Track jobs to completion, prioritize requirements, support shutdowns and project schedules with minimal disruption.
  • Read equipment manuals, blueprints, state/local codes, trade manuals.
  • Distinguish colors and use color codes effectively.
  • Communicate clearly over phone and two‑way radio.
  • Execute assignments timely; work on-call, rotating swing shift, holidays.
  • Lift 75-pound objects, maneuver heavier objects such as manhole covers.
  • Valid California driver’s license.
  • Pre-employment medical physical required.
  • Willingness to work on-call, rotating shifts, evenings, and holidays; accommodate overtime.
  • Adhere to Facilities Services work rules and Code of Conduct.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certification in Hard Splices and Pre-Formed Splice Kits.
  • Strong motor control skills.
  • Experience with outdoor lighting systems.
  • Knowledge of control systems for pumps and motors.
  • Experience with FS6 breakers, high/medium voltage breakers, relays, mains up to 600 V.
  • Knowledge of HVPPE, HV testing procedures.
  • Experience with high lifts and bucket trucks.
Salary & Benefits

Hourly, bi-weekly paid position; full-time career position eligible for full benefits. Compensation range provided by the University is based on experience, skills, and internal equity.
