Position: High Voltage Electrician (8154C), Facilities Services - #85661

Department Overview

Facilities Services continually improves campus infrastructure, partnering with all university stakeholders to support teaching, learning and research. With over 400 staff members, the unit manages asset maintenance, custodial services, engineering operations, environmental stewardship, grounds, and more.

Position Summary

Utilities Maintenance group is responsible for operation and maintenance of campus utilities—steam, high voltage, natural gas, water, and sewer distribution. The role performs preventive maintenance, repairs, emergency response, and regulatory compliance across all campuses.

Responsibilities
  • High‑Voltage Electrician (65%)
    • Inspect, maintain, test, repair, operate, troubleshoot, and replace 4160 V, 12 kV, and 115 kV apparatus.
    • Switch high‑voltage equipment and prepare switching procedures.
    • Maintain switches, circuit breakers, transformers, relays, transmission lines, cables, and terminations.
    • Calibrate relays, splice and terminate cables (preferred skills).
    • Troubleshoot control systems for pumps and motors of various voltages (preferred skills).
    • Coordinate repairs with other trades at PP‑CS and shutdown coordination to keep utilities operational.
    • Maintain utility support systems such as pumps, streetlights, and other electrical systems.
    • Respond to high‑voltage requests, fire alarm calls, and SCADA installations.
  • Administrative Duties (10%)
    • Consult lead/supervisor or project superintendents on project modifications.
    • Interpret prints, schematics, wiring diagrams, flow charts, and project descriptions.
    • Support maintenance projects and programmatic work assignments.
    • Maintain accurate work records and complete paperwork promptly.
    • Serve as liaison with clients, conveying needs to the appropriate department.
    • Obtain required materials and equipment.
  • Safety (20%)
    • Follow university and departmental safety guidelines.
    • Attend all job‑related safety training.
    • Maintain knowledge of OSHA, NEC, and high‑voltage safety regulations, completing 40‑hour documented high‑voltage safety training.
    • Keep updated on high‑voltage testing procedures and equipment.
  • Other (5%)
    • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • California State Electrical license.
  • Completed five‑year electrical apprenticeship or equivalent.
  • Three years of high‑voltage experience.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and ability to interpret circuitry designs.
  • Knowledge of relays, VFDs, and codes for specific electrical projects.
  • Ability to interpret prints, schematics, wiring diagrams, flow charts, and project requirements.
  • Operation of electrical machines, equipment, and hand or power tools.
  • Work in confined spaces and acute access requirements.
  • Excellent communication skills in a multicultural environment.
  • Track jobs to completion and prioritize to support shutdowns and schedules.
  • Understand manufacturer manuals, service requests, blueprints, codes, and trade manuals.
  • Use color codes effectively and distinguish colors.
  • Clear over-the‑phone and radio communication.
  • Execute job assignments timely.
  • Work in confined spaces, high lifts, and heavy loads (e.g., 75‑lb lifts).
  • Valid California driver’s license.
  • Pre‑employment medical physical required.
  • Availability to respond to emergencies, on‑call, swing shift, holidays, and overtime.
  • Adhere to Facilities Services work rules and Code of Conduct.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certification in hard splices and pre‑formed splice kits.
  • Strong conduit installation abilities.
  • Motor control skills, with or without drawings.
  • Experience with outdoor lighting systems.
  • Control system knowledge for pumps and motors.
  • Experience with FS6 breakers, high and medium voltage breakers, relays, and mains up to 600 V.
  • Knowledge of HVPPE, high‑voltage testing, and equipment.
  • Training in high‑lift and bucket‑truck operation.
Salary & Benefits

Hourly, bi‑weekly paid position. Full‑time career position eligible for full benefits. Budgeted annual salary range: $78.66, Step 1.
