High Voltage Electrician (8154C), Facilities Services Position Summary

The Utilities Maintenance group operates and maintains campus utilities, including high voltage electrical distribution. High voltage electricians install, repair, and troubleshoot the University’s high voltage system that receives power from Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) and distributes it across the main Berkeley campus.

Responsibilities High Voltage Electrician (65%)
  • Inspect, maintain, test, repair, operate, troubleshoot, and replace all 4160 V, 12 KV, and 115 KV apparatus on campus sites.
  • Switch high voltage equipment and prepare switching procedures.
  • Maintain switches, circuit breakers, transformers, relays, transmission lines, cables, and cable terminations.
  • Perform high voltage relay calibration, cable splicing, and cable terminating.
  • Troubleshoot control systems related to pumps and motors of various voltage supplies.
  • Coordinate repairs with other trades within the PP‑CS team.
  • Collaborate with other trades to coordinate shutdowns and keep all utilities and buildings operational.
  • Maintain utilities support systems such as pumps, streetlights, and other electrical systems.
  • Respond to high voltage requests; assist with fire alarm calls and SCADA installations.
Administrative Duties (10%)
  • Consult lead/supervisor on project requirements and standards.
  • Interpret prints, schematics, wiring diagrams, flow charts, and written descriptions of functions and project requirements.
  • Support maintenance projects and programmatic work assignments.
  • Keep accurate work records and complete paperwork promptly.
  • Serve as liaison with clients, relaying their needs to the appropriate department or superintendent.
  • Obtain materials and equipment as required.
Safety (20%)
  • Adhere to all University and departmental safety guidelines.
  • Attend all job‑related safety training.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of OSHA and NEC high voltage regulations and complete 40 hours of documented high voltage safety training.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of HVPPE, high voltage testing procedures, and high voltage equipment.
Other (5%)
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • California State Electrical License.
  • Completed a five‑year electrical apprenticeship program or equivalent.
  • Three years of high voltage experience.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and ability to interpret complex circuitry designs.
  • Knowledge of relays, VFDs, and electronic devices.
  • Proficient with correct tools, techniques, and methods for electrical projects.
  • Ability to interpret prints, schematics, wiring diagrams, flow charts, and written descriptions of functions and project requirements.
  • Experience operating electrical machines and hand or power tools needed for job tasks.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and access areas requiring stairs, ladders, or scaffolding.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to interact positively with the campus community in a multicultural environment.
  • Ability to track jobs to completion and prioritize requirements; support shutdowns and project schedules.
  • Ability to interpret equipment manufacturer manuals, service requests, layout sketches, blueprints, and relevant codes.
  • Ability to distinguish colors and use color codes effectively.
  • Clear verbal communication over telephone and two‑way radio.
  • Execute all job assignments in a timely manner.
  • Willing and able to work in confined spaces such as vaults and manholes; able to work in high lifts to reach overhead lines.
  • Able to lift 75‑pound objects and maneuver heavier objects such as manhole covers.
  • Valid California driver’s license.
  • Pre‑employment medical physical required.
  • Available to respond to emergencies, work on‑call, rotating swing shift, and holidays.
  • Ability to accommodate campus overtime needs.
  • Adhere to Facilities Services work rules and Code of Conduct.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Hard splice and pre‑formed splice kit certification from a licensed school or approved training program.
  • Strong conduit installation abilities.
  • Motor control skills with or without drawings.
  • Experience with outdoor lighting systems.
  • Knowledge of control systems related to pumps and motors.
