This part‑time appointment (40% FTE) reports to the Director of Fabrication Services and is responsible for ensuring safe and efficient use of the CED Fabrication Shop, Digital Fabrication Lab, Material Store, Shop Yard, and Spray Booth. The position provides instruction, supervision, equipment maintenance, safety training, inventory oversight, and support for departmental projects and outreach activities.
Responsibilities- Provide instruction on safe use and supervise activity in the fabrication resources.
- Consult and assist users on project design and execution.
- Promote a safe, professional, inclusive, and positive shop culture.
- Maintain adherence to EH&S, CalOSHA, and campus compliance rules.
- Work collaboratively to schedule and deliver safety orientations and trainings, order supplies, schedule maintenance/upgrades, and manage inventories.
- Assist with departmental projects, builds, classroom and shop/lab renovations, and plan and teach workshops.
- Perform other duties as assigned, including furniture building, repairing, and refinishing.
- Woodshop fabrication skills and digital fabrication skills.
- Advanced knowledge of jig construction, fixturing, and unconventional building methods.
- Working knowledge of digital fabrication tools/software for laser cutting, 3D printing, and CNC cutting.
- Ability to instruct, mentor, and work with a diverse student population.
- Strong interpersonal skills, sensitivity, tact, and diplomacy.
- Ability to consult and advise on instructional, research, design, construction, and furniture projects.
- Patient, effective communication, and the capacity to work in a high‑stress, busy, loud environment.
- Proficient reading, writing, and following of oral/written instructions in English.
- High level of motivation, initiative, and customer‑service attitude.
- Punctual, reliable, and professional.
- Physical ability to access work sites, including heights and confined spaces, to stand, bend, kneel, and lift up to 25 pounds.
- Certified Red Cross first aid and CPR training or ability to achieve certification within three months.
- Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field and at least two years of professional experience.
- Basic metalworking/welding, sculpture skills, concrete, and mold‑making.
