Departmental OverviewFacilities Services works to continuously improve the campus by ensuring classrooms, laboratories, and offices support teaching, learning and research. With over 400 dedicated staff members serving more than 10 million building square feet across 1100 acres, the department manages asset management, custodial services, maintenance operations, engineering and technical services, environmental services, grounds operations, and the Cal Zero Waste program.
Position SummaryThe role involves performing recycling and/or refuse collection duties following established practices and policies. The incumbent operates a rear loader packer truck and other Class B vehicles to collect refuse, recyclables, or green waste on a specific route, assists with loading and unloading, runs the rear end controls, stops to collect materials placed within receptacles, replaces the receptacles, and drives the packer truck to landfill, transfer stations, recycling centers, or other designated sites.
The position conducts safety and maintenance inspections of trucks according to schedule.
- Drive a rear loader packer truck or other Class B vehicle and assist in loading/unloading recyclable material, green waste, garbage, etc.
- Dump trucks and collect litter and empty receptacles.
- Deliver and collect receptacles.
- Operate loading and compacting controls on trucks.
- Clean and lubricate pivot points on truck bodies.
- Inspect components and fluid levels for cab chassis, body and motors.
- Check stress points for wear.
- Check air pressure in tires and tire wear.
- Recognize and immediately report problems and service needs to the lead or supervisor.
- Conduct truck safety inspections daily as required by the California Highway Patrol BIT Program.
- Follow health and safety guidelines/instructions and use PPE (gloves, ear plugs, dust masks, hard‑toe shoes, uniforms).
- Keep accurate records such as dump tag service requests, recharge numbers, and route lists.
- Paint, label, and maintain containers and equipment as needed or directed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Demonstrated skill and experience driving a packer truck and/or large Class B commercial trucks safely in tight, confined areas.
- Knowledge and skill to perform vehicle maintenance and safety inspections.
- Must read, write, and communicate in English.
- Able to work with minimal supervision.
- Interpret and follow verbal and written instructions.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Move up to 75–100 lbs. routinely.
- Interpersonal skills and ability to work cooperatively with co‑workers, clients and the campus community.
- Work outdoors in fluctuating or extreme weather conditions.
- Respond to emergencies, work overtime, weekends, and holidays for which time is reimbursed.
- Knowledge of principles of recycling and composting.
