Job Description
At Boeing, we innovate and collaborate to make the world a better place. We’re committed to fostering an environment for every teammate that’s welcoming, respectful and inclusive, with great opportunity for professional growth. Find your future with us.
The Boeing Company is seeking an Associate Software Engineer to join our Phantom Works software team in Berkeley, MO. This position will focus on supporting the Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS) Software Engineering organization.
Phantom Works is where imagination meets engineering excellence — a place where bold ideas are shaped to transform the future of defense. Driven by curiosity and relentless problem-solving, our team pushes boundaries across aerospace, autonomy, emerging technologies and advanced materials to create breakthrough capabilities that keep people and warfighters safe, and missions successful. With a culture of collaboration, integrity, and rigorous testing, Phantom Works transforms daring concepts into trusted, operational solutions that inspire confidence and expand what’s possible in the skies and beyond.
In this role, you will develop reusable software and maintain software services that support manned, unmanned, and autonomous aircraft programs. You will focus on building containerized C++ services, implementing standards-based interfaces (OMS/UCI), and contributing to shared infrastructure that enables autonomy development in both simulation and flight environments.
Join Us. Build the Future.
The ideal candidate will have strong fundamentals in AI/ML—such as supervised and unsupervised learning, neural networks, and reinforcement learning—and an interest in applying AI and LLMs to aerospace and defense use cases. They will also be well-versed in autonomous systems, robotics, and/or defense mission systems, with highly preferred experience working with OMS (Open Mission Systems) or UCI (Universal Command and Control Interface) standards.
Experience with Git-based workflows, CI/CD tools such as Git Lab CI or Jenkins, and Agile development is strongly valued. Additional highly preferred skills include proficiency with build systems like CMake, Conan, and Bazel (or similar) and experience using Python scripting for testing and automation. Familiarity with message-passing frameworks such as DDS, ZeroMQ, or gRPC is also highly preferred.
This position is expected to be 100% onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.
Position Responsibilities:
Design, develop, and maintain C++ autonomy services within Phantom Works autonomy platforms
Implement and maintain standards-based interfaces (OMS/UCI) for inter-service communication
Develop and maintain containerized services using Docker/Podman in Linux environments
Integrate services across simulation and flight environments
Participate in code reviews, unit testing, and CI/CD pipeline maintenance
Document service interfaces, architectures, and integration patterns
Contribute to Dev Sec Ops practices including automated builds, static analysis, and security scanning
Track work items and participate in Agile sprint activities
Collaborate within a multi-disciplinary team and follow established engineering processes
Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):
Bachelor’s Degree
Active U.S. Secret Security Clearance
2+ years of experience developing software using C++
Experience working with Linux
Experience with Git Lab or similar version control tools
