The Middle School Lunch Aide ensures a safe, orderly, and respectful environment in the cafeteria and designated common areas during student lunch periods for grades 4 through
8. This position requires active supervision, strong communication skills tailored to pre-teens and early adolescents, and the ability to maintain consistent routine and safety standards across multiple lunch shifts.
Key Responsibilities
Student Supervision & Conduct
- Actively monitor students during all assigned lunch periods across grades 4 through 8, circulating throughout the cafeteria rather than remaining seated.
- Reinforce school-wide behavioral expectations and cafeteria rules using proactive, age-appropriate strategies.
- Address minor behavioral concerns promptly and calmly; report major discipline issues or repeated misconduct to building administration.
- Promote a respectful, inclusive, and positive dining environment for all students.
Safety & Logistics
- Assist with student flow entering and exiting the cafeteria to ensure efficient transitions between grade-level lunch periods.
- Ensure students remain in designated areas during their assigned lunch periods (cafeteria, hallways, or outdoor areas, if applicable).
- Monitor for student safety, medical emergencies, or dietary concern awareness (e.g., severe allergies or designated nut-free seating).
- Assist students with basic cafeteria needs (condiment stations, recycling/waste disposal, line management).
- De-escalation: Ability to remain calm under pressure and de-escalate minor peer conflicts before they escalated.
Key Qualifications & Requirements
- Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Experience: Prior experience working with upper elementary or middle school-aged children preferred.
- Physical Demands: Ability to stand, walk, bend, and move continuously for the duration of the 2-hour shift.
- Background Check: Must clear required state/district criminal background checks and child protection clearances prior to hire.
