POSITION SUMMARY
The Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction serves as a key member of the Superintendent's Cabinet, providing visionary leadership in translating the district's educational philosophy, Board of Education goals, and CSDE priorities into a coherent, high-quality K-12 instructional program. This role is responsible for the strategic oversight of curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional learning, ensuring all students have equitable access to rigorous learning opportunities.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Certification:
Valid Connecticut Intermediate Administrator/Supervisor Certificate (092) required; 093 (Superintendent) preferred. - Experience:
Minimum of five (5) years of successful building-level administrative experience (Principalship preferred). Demonstrated success in leading district-wide curriculum initiatives and professional development. Proven track record in data-driven decision-making and narrowing achievement gaps.
Strategic Instructional Leadership
- Assists in establishing annual district instructional goals aligned with Board of Education priorities.
- Leads initiatives ensuring all instructional materials and practices are culturally responsive and provide equitable outcomes for all student populations with a goal of providing equity and access for all students.
- Leads curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation in conjunction with the Curriculum Directors while responding to student achievement, teacher feedback, and state mandates.
- Educational Technology:
Oversees the integration of instructional technology and digital literacy, ensuring AI policy and 1:1 device programs enhance pedagogical goals. - Collaborates with Curriculum Directors and building principals to support site-based instructional goal setting and continuous improvement.
- Chairs the Curriculum Council and manages communication, documentation, and follow-through of Council initiatives.
- Directs K-12 textbook and instructional resource review and adoption processes.
- Works collaboratively with the Director of Pupil Personnel to monitor the district's Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) and Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) frameworks.
- Oversees, in conjunction with the Curriculum Directors, all district-wide student assessment systems (SBA, NGSS, SAT, and local benchmarks) to ensure compliance with CSDE requirements.
- Data Systems:
Supervises the District Data Specialist and leads the District Data Team in establishing systems for the effective use of data at the district, school, and classroom levels. - Presents high-level reports to the Board of Education and the public regarding student growth and achievement trends.
- Coordinates the collection, validation, and reporting of data for CSDE accountability systems and performance dashboards.
- Professional Growth:
Oversees the Professional Growth and Evaluation Committee (PDEC) to plan and implement job-embedded professional development. - Educator Induction:
Oversees the TEAM program and new teacher orientation to ensure retention of high-quality certified staff. - Supervision:
Supervises and evaluates Directors of Curriculum and district instructional leaders. - Assists in the recruitment, selection, and retention of certified personnel, serving on administrative search committees as needed.
- Registration, Residency & Transportation:
Provides administrative oversight for district registration, residency verification, and transportation services to ensure equitable access to services. Acts as the district's Homeless Liaison. - Grants Management:
Authors, administers and directs others with State and Federal Grants. - Policy Development:
Assists the Superintendent in developing Board policies and administrative regulations. - Budget:
Manages budgets for curriculum, instruction, and professional learning; assists in the annual district budget development and presentation.. - Acting Superintendent:
Serves in the capacity of the Superintendent, as assigned, during the Superintendent's absence. - Supervises Directors of Curriculum and assists in supervising building principals.
- Communication:
Exceptional written and oral communication skills; ability to present complex data to diverse stakeholders. - Change Management:
Ability to lead large-scale organizational change and build consensus among staff. - Regulatory Knowledge:
Deep understanding of Connecticut State Statutes, CSDE frameworks, and federal mandates (ESSA). - Technological Fluency:
Proficiency with Student Information Systems (SIS), Data Warehousing, and Learning Management Systems (LMS).
