Engineering Technician (CONVEX)

Position Summary

An intermediate-level job within the Engineering Technician (CONVEX) progression. Provides the incumbent with experience and training necessary for advancement to the fully qualified level of Engineering Technician A (CONVEX). Performs a variety of technical and engineering assignments associated with supporting the safe and reliable operation of the transmission systems at CONVEX.

Primary Duties

Performs or assists in performing within limits of experience and ability the duties as contained in the job description entitled Engineering Technician A (CONVEX). For example, perform the following tasks with minimal supervision:

Designs, builds, implements, tests and maintains databases for various applications associated with the Energy Management System.

Designs, builds, implements, tests and maintains computer system video display (software) for various applications associated with the Energy Management System.

Coordinates with the Independent System Operator and other agencies in order to perform testing or work on various operating computer systems.

Designs, builds, implements, tests and maintains computer generated logs and reports for various computer systems.

Performs acceptance, installation or post installation tests on computer systems, equipment or programs.

Operates and maintains computers and equipment associated with various computer systems.

Reads and interprets engineering drawings, schematic, wiring and interconnection diagrams.

Performs routine backup and preservation procedures to protect vital data, programs and information associated with various computer systems.

Develops and writes procedures, sketches and instructions for the planning, design, implementation, operation and maintenance of various computer systems.

Monitors the overall performance of various computer systems to identify hardware and/or software malfunctions; coordinates repairs with appropriate agencies.

Writes, maintains and uses software programs and packages for various computer systems; diagnoses software problems and takes corrective action.

Provides assistance in System Operator Training Program on how to use various computer systems.

Assist in various tasks associated with merging CONVEX power system models with that of ISO and others.

Serves on-call and during emergency restoration efforts as assigned.

Accountability/End Results

Commensurate with experience and ability, has accountability as defined in the job description entitled Engineering Technician A (CONVEX). Exercises some judgments within framework as established by supervisor.

Typical Requirements (Minimum)

Training and Experience
1. High School diploma plus two years of formal technical training in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering, or the equivalent. 2. Two years of related experience. Knowledge/Skill
1. Demonstrated basic working knowledge of computer system concepts, operations and programming.
2. Demonstrated basic knowledge of power system operations.
3. Demonstrated technical writing skills as required to support assignments.
4. Demonstrated effective oral communication skills.
5. Demonstrated ability to work well with others.
6. Demonstrated ability to carry out work assignments with limited supervision.
