Job Description
Title: Special Education Paraprofessional
Reports To: Supervising Case Manager, Building Principal, Program Director or Superintendent
Equipment Used: Basic office equipment (photocopiers), classroom computers and Chromebooks, Google Workspace apps, adaptive equipment such as auditory trainers, AAC devices, physical aids as needed. Training provided.
Work Environment: 90% indoors, 10% outdoors (bus/pickup/recess supervision).
Physical Requirements: Occasionally lift or carry up to 10 lbs; lift students with mobility impairments or assist with toileting up to 50 lbs. Only certified in Crisis Prevention Intervention® may assist in restraint of disruptive students.
GeneralJob Description
Provide support services to enable students to achieve productive learning experiences within their prescribed Individualized Education Plans (IEPs). Tasks include instructional support in small groups or individually, preparation of educational materials, monitoring group activities, providing personal assistance, and other duties as specified by the IEP or determined by the Program Director or Building Principal. Documentation and 30‑day reviews may be required for the Medicaid to Schools program.
EssentialFunctions
- Ensure safety of assigned students and those they may interact with.
- Perform all duties in accordance with Berlin Public Schools policies, the Berlin School Board, and the NH Department of Education.
- Follow instructions and apply the components of the IEP under supervision.
- Assist classroom teachers in guiding the learning process, preparing and distributing materials, and maintaining a conducive classroom environment.
- Support students in developing social skills and reinforce positive behavior.
- Follow individual behavior plans and enforce school rules and policies.
- Supervise students on the playground, lunchroom, bus duty, and other locations as directed.
- Help administer tests, including standardized tests, with required IEP accommodations.
- Maintain confidentiality of student information in accordance with FERPA.
- Attend mandatory meetings and training.
- Write a Professional Development Plan every three years.
- Serve as a positive role model and adhere to school policies, including dress code, cell phone use, absentee procedures, and Title IX reporting.
- Perform other job‑related duties as directed by the Supervising Case Manager or other supervisory staff.
Paraprofessionals are not certified teachers and do not perform tasks reserved for teachers. They work under the supervision of the case manager and the classroom teacher. They may assist with material preparation but must not provide initial instruction. They handle only the responsibilities outlined in the IEP and should communicate through the teacher or case manager, not directly with parents.
