The Quality Inspector is responsible for the receiving, in-process, first article, and final inspection of machined components to ensure conformance to engineering drawings, specifications, and customer requirements. This role centers on precision measurement and coordinate measuring machine (CMM) operation, supported by a strong working knowledge of manufacturing and machining processes. The position also supports supplier quality, the quality management system, and a range of quality related projects.
Roles and Responsibilities- Perform receiving, in-process, first article, and final dimensional and visual inspection of machined components to verify conformance to engineering drawings, specifications, and customer requirements.
- Set up, operate, and program coordinate measuring machines (CMM) to inspect complex geometries and generate inspection reports.
- Use precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, height gauges, bore gauges, thread gauges, indicators, gauge pins, and optical comparators.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) per ASME Y14.5.
- Apply working knowledge of manufacturing and machining processes such as milling, turning, grinding, and EDM to anticipate and identify quality issues at the source.
- Prepare and review first article reports (FAR / AS9102) and associated documentation packages.
- Review work orders, travelers, test reports, and material certifications for accuracy, completeness, and traceability; verify labeling, serialization, and part markings.
- Identify, segregate, and document nonconforming material; initiate nonconformance reports (NCRs) and support disposition, corrective action (CAPA), and root cause analysis.
- Assist in supplier management and approval, including source and receiving inspection, supplier corrective actions, and maintenance of the approved supplier list.
- Maintain gauge calibration and measurement system integrity; support internal and external quality audits and the quality management system.
- Record and analyze inspection data in Microsoft Excel; track and report quality metrics.
- Collaborate with quality engineers, production, and engineering to resolve quality issues identified during inspection.
- Assist with other quality related projects and initiatives as assigned.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Demonstrated CMM operation experience required; CMM programming (such as PC-DMIS or Calypso) strongly preferred.
- Strong precision measurement skills and proficiency with inspection instruments.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and GD&T (ASME Y14.5).
- Solid working knowledge of manufacturing and machining processes and their effect on part quality.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel for inspection data entry, tracking, and analysis.
- Familiarity with a quality management system such as ISO 9001, AS9100, or ISO 13485; experience with AS9102 first article requirements preferred.
- Experience with supplier quality, receiving inspection, and approved supplier processes preferred.
- Minimum 3 to 5 years of quality inspection experience in a machining or manufacturing environment preferred.
- High attention to detail and tolerances, with strong documentation habits.
- ASQ certification (such as Certified Quality Inspector) a plus.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; technical or associate degree a plus.
- U.S. citizenship may be required to support defense related work.
