Job Description
This position is for an experienced or professional land surveyor (PLS) that will lead survey field and office activities, operate survey instruments and collect various survey-level information in the field. The individual will be responsible for performing field quality control, performs office distillation of field data, all types of survey computations; preparation of TINs and surfaces, and final mapping in an AutoCAD or equivalent environment.
This is a rotational, hourly full time position with both office and field work requirements. The individual will be responsible for leading and mentoring survey technicians on a periodic basis. The primary work location will be Red Dog Mine, on a rotational basis.
- Responsible for establishing official land, air space and water boundaries.
- Provides all types of survey research, computations, computer-aided survey drafting of topographic maps and plats
- Provides written descriptions of land and parcels for deeds, leases, and other legal documents in accordance with local, state, federal and project requirements.
- Provides reporting of daily activities and accurate notes (field log books) of activities.
- Reports on project progress and completion status to the client or through the Kuna Director of Survey.
- Supervises project field crew(s) and/or serves as field Party Chief of a one to two-person field survey crews in urban and remote areas of Alaska, including scheduling, management and coordination of the daily and on-going operations of the field survey crew.
- Work in the field on control, boundary, subdivision, topographic & design surveys, aerial mapping control and aeronautical surveys; may also perform hydrographic surveying.
- Accurately run and adjust survey measuring instruments including digital levels, GPS equipment, and total stations with electronic data collecting capabilities.
- Take accurate and clear field notes and sketches; perform note reduction.
- Understand and identify basic sources of measurement errors.
- Perform mathematical calculations and check field data in the field.
- Perform data reduction, field note reduction, calculations, data checks and staking computations using survey programs and AutoCAD.
- Project management duties including: quality control, project tracking from start to finish, client contact.
- Perform quality control checks on each project, including computations, field book formats and content.
- Perform project research, logistics and management, review plats and prepare legal descriptions.
- Adhere to the company’s policies, safety plan and the project safety plan.
- Mentor survey team, including professional & technical oversight and guidance
- Other duties that are pertinent to the department or unit’s success also may be assigned.
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Minimum three (3) to five (5) years of field survey experience in a wide variety of roles and positions, including at urban and remote locations.
- Professional Land Surveyor license is desired, but not required.
- Must be proficient in the use of total stations, GPS receivers and data collectors, GPS reduction software such as Trimble Business Center.
- Experience in AutoCAD with demonstrated survey drafting skills required.
- Ability to read and understand survey drawings, plans & specifications.
- Knowledge of principles of monumentation, staking and marking.
- Must be proficient with MS Word and Excel.
- Must possess good interpersonal skills, and effective written and oral communication skills.
- Must be productive and positive working in both the field and office environments.
- Attendance, punctuality and reliability are essential requirements.
- Must be able and willing to travel within Alaska.
- Position level will be determined by education, experience and skill set of the selected candidate.
- A valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record for the past three (3) years to be eligible under company vehicle insurance policy.
