Maintenance Specialist – Bldg./Facility/Const – Journey 1 (Labor, Trades, and Crafts (LL) bargaining unit, wage grade 53)

Key ResponsibilitiesAs the Army National Guard's Maintenance Specialist Bldg./Facility/Const. – Journey 1, you work independently to construct, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain multiple state facilities.
Responsibilities include:
- Conducting complex heating and ventilating system troubleshooting and repair, including burner tune‑ups for boilers and furnaces, and installing Toyo stoves.
- Performing preventative maintenance on heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and using direct digital control (DDC) control systems to optimize building efficiency and comfort.
- Diagnosing and repairing electrical problems in lighting systems, building wiring, and electrical panels, including replacing outlets, switches, lighting ballasts, and solving 120‑volt and 220‑volt issues.
- Installing, repairing, and troubleshooting plumbing issues, including replacement or repair of toilets, urinals and associated equipment.
- Interpreting complex blueprints, ladder diagrams, schematics, specifications, and control logic.
- Using computers and specialized software for maintenance documentation and troubleshooting.
- Working overtime and traveling as required.
The position is responsible for two facilities in Bethel and multiple facilities located in the villages of Kipnuk, Quinhagak, Kwetuluk, and Hooper Bay. Given the limited staff, the employee must be competent in all trades and able to independently plan, conduct, and complete maintenance tasks.

Required Competencies- Mechanical: Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, installation, uses, repair, and maintenance.
- Civil Engineering: Knowledge of concepts, principles, theories, and methods required to plan, design, construct, operate, and maintain facilities such as buildings, transportation systems, water and sanitary systems, and other public works systems.
- Technical Problem Solving: Troubleshoots, diagnoses, analyzes, and identifies system malfunctions.
- Supervision: Plans, distributes, and monitors work assignments; sets task priorities; evaluates work performance and provides feedback.
- Self‑Management: Sets realistic personal goals; displays initiative, effort, and commitment; works with minimal supervision.
State of Alaska/Department of Administration Level 1 Procurement Authority and State Boiler License must be obtained within twelve (12) months of hire. Valid driver’s license is required.
