OverviewHorizons Greater Washington seeks dedicated and effective candidates with a penchant for cultivating students’ lifelong love of learning for the role of Floating Substitute Teacher in our five-week Summer Academy enrichment program.

ScheduleThe typical daily schedule will be Monday through Friday, 8 am to 3:15 pm. For staff members who are riding the bus for bus duty, your schedule will adjust accordingly, based on bus schedules.

Organizational BackgroundHorizons Greater Washington (HGW), an affiliate of Horizons National, is a dedicated leader in advancing educational opportunities by creating long-term partnerships with students, families, communities, and schools to create enriching out-of-school experiences that ignite the joy of learning for our students.
HGW supports over 400 students across grades 1–9 with robust year-round programming. Our approach is centered on whole-child development, specifically focusing on building problem-solving skills, fostering a strong sense of community responsibility, and instilling respect for self and others. By maintaining this multi-year commitment from the first to the ninth grade, HGW cultivates meaningful, long-term connections between diverse learners and dedicated, supportive staff.
Our program design and staff practices utilize a Positive Youth Development framework, prioritizing engagement, interaction, support, and a safe environment to effectively meet the needs of our youth.
The cornerstone of our work is the five-week Summer Academy, which expertly blends high-quality academics—with a specific focus on math, humanities, literacy, and STEAM—with comprehensive social-emotional learning, arts instruction, swimming, and confidence-building opportunities.
Position DescriptionThe Floating Substitute Teacher is a critical member of a site’s instructional team and promotes the social, emotional, and intellectual well-being of HGW students in the absence of a classroom teacher or assistant. As needed, the Floating Substitute may be asked to assist in different classrooms that may need additional support throughout the program day or help other instructional staff members with curriculum planning.
Candidates must have the ability and desire to work with students in 1st through 9th grade.
- Attending a four-day orientation session (dates above) prior to the start of the program
- Flexing into classrooms where the regular teacher needs backup
- Serving as a full-day substitute support when a teacher is out
- Collaborating with staff to understand and forecast substitute needs to the extent possible to enable proactive planning for absences
- Providing the best possible student experience consistent with expectations for academic rigor, student engagement, and effective teaching
- With the support of Site Director and other members of the instructional staff, identifying priority content areas and classrooms to lend collaboration and support
- Collaborating on assessment and feedback to students to drive learning and improve outcomes
- Performing other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective operation of assigned HGW site
In addition to having a steadfast commitment to Horizons’ mission, the ideal candidate will possess classroom experience in project-based instruction, behavior management, and differentiation. Candidates must also be flexible, organized, and self-driven.
