Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO) has an immediate opening for an Associate System Information Specialist. The primary functions of this position will be to participate in both field and office activities involving data collection, image capture, data maintenance, and limited mapping of work packets for the Cooperative using Geographic Information System (GIS) software and hardware platform(s). This position will complete fieldwork necessary to maintain electric GIS data post-construction while completing necessary office tasks to process photos taken during fieldwork.
This position will complete editing to move existing features in GIS to proper location based on GPS data gathered during fieldwork. Lastly, this position will update GIS for select job types of lesser complexity by mapping work packets and/or emergency work requests post-construction, and participate in Cooperative, industry professional groups and committees in support of system related projects and initiatives.
Ideal candidate should enjoy working predominantly outdoors year-round and in an office setting. Seeking motivated talent with a background in GIS that has a strong interest in learning how the technology and software is utilized at an electric utility.
A two-year Associate of Science degree from an ABET accredited college or university in a geography, cartography, engineering, or information technology discipline with coursework in GIS or other mapping software is preferred.
A minimum of two years in a mapping, field data collection, or other GIS related discipline, preferably at an electric or telecom focused business or organization where use of GIS is mainstay. Hands-on proficiency using ESRI Arc Map or ArcGIS Pro software is preferred, in addition to proficiency using GPS field mapping device(s) and mobile GIS software.
The starting salary range for this position is $72,000 - $93,300. SMECO offers an excellent benefits program including a 401(k) 6% dollar for dollar match and an additional 3% non-elective company contribution.
