Transportation Engineering Technician II

Grade 10 (8447) SP# 2 6-73-05. (OPEN RECRUITMENT)

Nature of Work:

This position is responsible for operating specialized testing vehicles with and without a trailer, up to 26,000 lbs Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR). Vehicles are used in roadway testing on SHA network roadways following AASHTO and ASTM standards, including surface friction testing and the ARAN automated data collection system. The position is supervised by the Pavement Testing Team Leader, with daily guidance from the ARAN or Friction Crew Chief.

Responsibilities include operating and performing routine and periodic safety and operational checks on testing vehicles and related equipment, and performing testing duties in the absence of the crew chief.

Education:

Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience:

One year of experience in technical engineering related work in the areas of design, traffic, construction, materials testing, engineering surveys, maintenance, or planning.

Preferred

Qualification:

Ability to operate a vehicle or equipment with and without a trailer attached up to 26,000 lb GVWR.

Notes:
  • Applicants may substitute education in a civil engineering curriculum at an accredited college or university at the rate of 30 semester credit hours for the required experience.
  • Applicants who possess an Associates Degree in Engineering, Construction Management or Surveying or Surveying Technology from an accredited community college, college or university are considered to have met the experience requirement. Candidate must possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the state of Maryland.
Additional Information – SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Candidate must be able to routinely travel statewide, which may require overnight stays up to 2 weeks duration during the data collection season.
