Position Requirements Overall Position Summary and Objectives

Serves as a fabricator and designer of special purpose electronic and electromechanical instruments systems for use in basic and clinical research in the biomedical sciences.

Objectives:
Provides fabrication of high quality electronic and electromechanical instruments in support of NIMH, NINDS and NICHD Intramural research labs;
Instruments are fabricated with close attention to the detail of the electronic circuit diagram and components;
Provides expert electronics knowledge in selecting supporting instrument components such as enclosures, panel layout, and power supplies

Statement of Work Details Designs and develops biomedical equipment.
  • Use Computer-Aided Design (CAD) for drafting parts or products; consult with NIH researchers and engineers on the application of instrumentation. 3
  • Collaborate with researchers on system interfaces and design between multiple medical equipment manufacturers and where commercial equipment is unavailable or unacceptable.
  • Design and fabricate high quality mechanical, electro-mechanical and optical instruments in support of research activities; and fabricate special purpose devices for clinical and research applications. 1
  • Design and fabricate commercially unavailable mechanical instruments and medical devices, special-purpose mechanical, electromechanical, optical, hydraulic instruments and devices. 2
  • Design and fabricate component parts or specialized tooling fixtures as required for fabricating parts and assemblies. 4
  • Manufacture and repair special parts for various types of lab equipment.
Coordinates the testing and analysis process.
  • Maintain, repair, modify, fabricate, install and test electronic and mechanical components. 5
  • Evaluate alternative design approaches, with due consideration to material properties and machining capabilities; select best design approach to meet the specifications.
  • Interpret and work from blueprints, sketches, drawings, and photos to fabricate, manufacture, and/or repair using various power and hand tools, and other equipment.
Tests the functionality of equipment and takes accuracy, sensitivity, and selectivity measurements.
  • Complete unscheduled service orders for equipment to include calibration, electronic and mechanical repairs.
  • Work with staff on the installation and initial checkout of the finished equipment in the experimental environment.
  • Plan and execute modifications to make improvements as needed following initial use.
  • Perform characterization measurements on fabricated devices using microscopy and other techniques.
Monitors biomedical equipment to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Analyze, modify, plan, install, evaluate, certify and correct system malfunctions
  • Maintain and update online protocols for equipment operation and microdevice fabrication.
  • Maintain laboratory organization and assist in compliance with safety regulations.
  • Work with staff on maintaining records of facility and equipment usage.
Provides technical training on equipment operations.
  • Provide in-services for staff, interns, students and support personnel.
  • Provide technical expertise in the use of special devices and equipment, enhancing the productivity or success of the experiments
    - Train new users in equipment use, and assist users in device fabrication.
