Job Title: Lead Tax Accountant – Family Office
Location: Bethesda, MD (100% Onsite)
Duration: Direct Hire
Salary Range: $100,000 – $120,000 Base + Benefits
We are seeking an experienced Lead Accountant to support a highly confidential Family Office environment managing financial and tax compliance activities for high-net-worth individuals, trusts, private foundations, and family-owned entities. This role requires strong technical tax and accounting expertise, exceptional attention to detail, and the ability to manage sensitive financial data with the highest level of discretion.
The Lead Accountant will partner closely with internal leadership, external tax advisors, investment managers, and legal teams to ensure accurate financial reporting, regulatory compliance, and proper documentation of family assets and transactions. This role plays a critical part in supporting overall tax compliance, financial reporting, and investment tracking across multiple entities and asset classes.
Responsibilities- Maintain accurate financial records across multiple family office entities including trusts, investment entities, and related structures
- Prepare and reconcile monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
- Ensure proper classification, documentation, and reporting of investment transactions, cash flows, and valuations
- Monitor and track investments across asset classes including private equity, real estate, public securities, and alternative investments
- Support preparation of financial performance reporting including income, gains, losses, and investment returns
- Assist with preparation and coordination of tax filings for individuals, trusts, estates, and special-purpose entities
- Coordinate with external tax advisors to ensure timely and compliant tax filings
- Monitor and evaluate tax law changes impacting high-net-worth individuals and family office structures
- Manage and respond to federal and state tax notices
- Track and record financial activity related to personal spending, investments, real estate, and charitable contributions
- Maintain records related to gifts, inheritances, and estate planning documentation
- Prepare financial summaries and reports for family, board, and trustee meetings
- Maintain strong internal controls and governance processes to ensure financial accuracy and compliance
- Identify and resolve financial discrepancies through regular financial statement review
- Manage relationships with external accountants, auditors, tax advisors, and financial service providers
- Support cross-functional coordination between tax, legal, and financial stakeholders
- Provide financial insights to support investment strategy, risk management, and estate planning decisions
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred
- 6+ years of public tax accounting experience supporting high-net-worth individuals
- Strong income tax compliance experience including individuals, trusts, estates, and foundations
- Experience supporting investment accounting including private equity, real estate, and marketable securities
- Knowledge of tax regulations impacting high-net-worth individuals and family office structures
- Experience working with multi-entity financial environments
- Strong proficiency in accounting systems such as Quick Books, Sage Intacct, or CCH Access
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills including financial analysis and data management
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities
- Ability to handle highly confidential financial information with professionalism and discretion
- CPA preferred or in progress
- Public tax professional with strong exposure to high-net-worth individual returns
- Experience working with complex tax structures including trusts, estates, and pass-through entities
- Strong understanding of investment vehicles and related accounting treatment
- Comfortable working in a highly confidential, relationship-driven environment
- Detail-oriented with strong reconciliation and financial reporting skills
- Strong communicator with experience coordinating across tax, legal, and investment stakeholders
