The Maryland Department of Transportation The Secretary's Office (MDOT TSO) is seeking a General Ledger Accountant (Fiscal Services Administrator I) within the Office of Finance. The General Ledger Accountant is responsible for the day-to-day financial operations of The Secretary’s Office as well as the overall financial health of the Maryland Department of Transportation. The General Ledger Accountant ensures the integrity and accuracy of MDOT’s general ledger, as contained in the Financial Management Information System (FMIS), all in accordance with generally accepted accounting principals (GAAP), State laws and regulations, and the State’s Accounting Procedures Manual.
Dutiesand responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Performing accounts payable and accounts receivable activities
- Verifying and posting of TSO transactions in a timely manner
- Reviewing and verifying all cost accounting information on requisitions for all purchases
- Preparing, analyzing, and interpreting various financial reports in State and MDOT FMIS, Web Focus, and/or Excel to ensure the proper recordation of financial transactions
- Reconciling, researching, and resolving complex accounting issues
- Ensuring the internal control environment regarding financial transactions and the entering of items in FMIS is adequate and enforced
- Completing yearend closing activities including accelerated processing timelines for all accounting transactions, additional examination of transactions to ensure they are being recorded in the correct fiscal year
- Researching and resolving vendor and payment inquiries as well as complex problems involving the interpretation and application of GAAP to MDOT financial operations
- Providing reports, documents, materials, and information to auditors, and assisting in developing and implementing corrective actions
The current vacancy exists at MDOT TSO in the Office of Finance which is located in Hanover, Maryland (Anne Arundel County).
The ability to take time off in July/August is limited due to fiscal yearend closing activities.
This position may allow a hybrid work schedule, including telework and required on-site work hours.

Preferred Qualifications EducationPossession of a bachelor's degree in accounting, auditing, public or business administration, finance, economics or a related field from an accredited college or university.
ExperienceFive (5) years of experience in professional accounting, auditing, budgeting, fiscal or financial management. Two (2) years of this experience must include experience in accounts payable, accounts receivable, bookkeeping, general accounting, or financial reporting.
The ideal candidate will have the following- At least one (1) year of experience using the State’s Financial Management Information System (FMIS).
