Medical Laboratory Scientist, Blood Bank (Contractor – National Institutes of Health, Clinical Center, Bethesda, MD)

• Perform laboratory testing in all pre‑analytical, analytical, and post‑analytical phases in accordance with regulatory and accrediting agency requirements.
• Perform compatibility cross‑matching testing of donor and patient–recipient samples using automated and manual methods.
• Independently resolve routine RBC blood group antibody problems and conduct moderately complex testing in consultation with technical specialists.
• Operate, calibrate, and maintain equipment used in quantitative and qualitative analysis (e.g., spectrophotometers, analyzers).
• Manage blood inventory and coordinate import/export of necessary blood components.
• Provide transfusion medicine training for accredited fellowship and specialist programs.
• Perform component manufacturing duties, including preparation of frozen plasma, leukoreduced RBCs, buffy coat, and pathogen‑reduced platelets.
• Execute lot release, labeling, and quality assurance functions to support continuous improvement of operations.
• Communicate with nurses and physicians to clarify transfusion or testing orders.
• Maintain laboratory documentation, report findings, and monitor compliance with standards.

• Bachelor’s degree in biology (acceptable).
• Minimum of three (3) years of blood bank experience in a laboratory environment preferred.
• Accredited clinical laboratory science training program in laboratory science.
