HJF is seeking a Histology Technician III-CPDR to produce histologic preparations that will be used for diagnostic purposes in the support of clinical research. This position will be in support of the Murtha Cancer Center Research Program's (MCCRP) Center for Prostate Disease Research (CPDR) located at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) in Bethesda, MD.
CPDR is a comprehensive research program to study prostate cancer and prostate disease, CPDR was established in 1992 (Public Law 102-172). The program's mission is fulfilled primarily through its three principal programs: (1) the Clinical Translational Research Center; (2) the Basic Science Research Program, and (3) the Multicenter National Prostate Cancer Database to encompass its clinical research work with participating military medical centers.

- Work as a histotechnician in the Walter Reed Laboratory, completing Henry Jackson Foundation work and supporting the Walter Reed team.
- Prepares routine diagnostic histologic preparations using standard procedures in accordance with guidelines established in a clinical research protocol. Logs specimens and performs a variety of routing histological procedures including serologic, immunohistochemical and immunoelectophoresis.
- Sorts and identifies specimens; cuts, stains and mounts specimens on slides; labels finished slides. Makes decisions regarding adjustment of staining procedures for certain tissues and special requested stain
- Prepares solutions and maintains laboratory equipment.
- Assists in gathering and recording data for research protocols.
- Performs slide and block filing for whole mount
- Performs data entry for whole mount research project and maintains database
- Prepares whole-mount prostate paraffin embedded blocks and sections using CPDR standard operating procedures.
- Prepares all prostate needle biopsies to include, fixed, embedded, H&E and unstained slides. Using AP standard operating procedures.
- Prepares special send-out for other testing such as molecular and other genetic tests.
- Setup system to match prostate biopsy and whole mount specimens.
- Assists with preparation of histological samples for shipping, pulling of archived slides and making recuts of tissue sections.
- Assists with maintenance, cleaning, and QC of laboratory spaces and equipment.
- Knowledge of other general laboratory procedures or the ability to cross train in other disciplines as needed.
- Order and maintain CPDR histology supplies.
- May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor.
- Bachelor's Degree
- Minimum of 6-8 years experience required
Skills and Abilities
- Competency in microtomy, embedding and staining of formalin-fixed paraffin embedded tissues.
- Maintains effective communication including verbal and written skills, and articulate concerns and updates in a professional manner.
- Completes all assigned tasks in a timely manner.
- Works proficiently in a fluctuating work environment, including maintaining productivity during laboratory down-time.
- Embraces new duties when needed, following appropriate instruction and supervision.
- Performs basic computer skills, including Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Office.
- Understands and articulates basic medical terminology and laboratory functions.
- Organize and prioritize work, act independently, as well as work collaboratively with techs/others.
- US Citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a T3/Secret Clearance
- Lifting:
Requires lifting materials over 25 lbs. - Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods.
- This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.
- This position is 100% on site and has no teleworking capability.
- 3:00pm - 11:00pm, Monday through Friday.
- The annual salary range for this position is $67,500- $79,865.39. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
