We are seeking a Medical Lab Scientist (Blood Bank) to support the Clinical Center at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD.
Overview

Logistics
- Shift: Training will occur during the day shift and the role will ultimately transfer to an afternoon/evening shift with rotating holiday and weekend shifts. Schedules are planned 1–2 months in advance to ensure sufficient coverage to maintain operations.
- Work Location: NIH Clinical Center, Bethesda, MD.
Responsibilities
Independently provide clinical lab support services to the NIH Clinical Center in the Department of Transfusion Medicine.Perform specialized and technically demanding serologic and molecular immunohematologic procedures for clinical diagnostic transfusion support and research purposes.Perform laboratory testing across pre‑analytical, analytical, and post‑analytical phases in accordance with regulatory and accrediting agency requirements.Evaluate blood transfusion orders for appropriateness based on screening criteria.Communicate with patients, nurses, and physicians to clarify questionable transfusion or testing orders.Perform compatibility cross‑matching testing of donor and patient‑recipient samples using automated and manual methods.Independently resolve routine RBC blood‑group antibody problems.Perform moderately complex testing in consultation with a technical specialist.Perform component manufacturing duties including preparing blood components such as frozen plasma, leuko‑reduced RBC, and buffy coats from whole blood collections and pathogen‑reduced platelets.Perform lot release and labeling for blood components.Manage blood inventory, arranging for import/export of necessary blood components.Provide transfusion medicine training for programs sponsored by the Clinical Center including the accredited Transfusion Medicine Fellowship and Specialists in Blood Banking program.Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or a discipline related to clinical laboratory science.Minimum of three (3) years of blood bank experience (preferred).Certification through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT).Availability to initially train during the day shift and ultimately work the afternoon/evening shift plus rotating weekend and holiday shifts.Kelly is an equal‑employment‑opportunity employer.
