The UE Resolutions (Claims) Team is looking for an experienced attorney to help us resolve some of our members’ most challenging claims. If this sounds appealing to you, please apply today! The core role is to evaluate claims and participate with members and defense counsel to develop claims resolution strategies.

Responsibilities
  • Monitor and manage claims files assigned, and alert and consult with supervisory counsel on those which may present company exposure.
  • Participate with the insured and defense counsel in developing a case resolution strategy.
  • Positively impact the resolution of files through early interaction, reference to ADR, mediation and effective litigation management.
  • Demonstrate mastery of claims handling expectations for complex matters including analyzing coverage, evaluating liability, providing strategic input, monitoring claims, determining claim values, reserving, reinsurance reporting, resolving matters, and reviewing legal bills.
  • Review initial liability and damage assessment with insured, including a discussion of coverage.
  • Draft acknowledgment/reservation of rights/declination letters and defense counsel appointment letters.
  • Evaluate budgets submitted by defense counsel for reasonableness; regularly review files for compliance with the agreed upon budget and strategy.
  • Establish relationships with insureds and defense counsel that are beneficial and aid the successful carrying out of the position’s responsibilities.
  • Perform legal research as needed.
Requirements
  • Typically requires two years of law firm experience (or equivalent experience demonstrating the required skills and responsibilities) for Associate Resolutions Counsel consideration.
  • Typically requires four years of law firm experience (or equivalent experience demonstrating the required skills and responsibilities) for Resolutions Counsel consideration.
  • Law degree and relevant experience defending or handling litigation involving employment, catastrophic bodily injury, personal injury, or educational issues.
  • Excellent written and oral communications.
  • Strong legal analysis, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Good negotiation and advocacy skills.
  • Knowledge of substantive law of higher education or insurance preferred but not required.
  • Demonstrated understanding of how artificial intelligence can enhance claims evaluation, improve outcomes, and drive efficiency across the claims resolution lifecycle.
  • Ability to drive strategic decision-making using data.
  • Ability to thrive in an atmosphere of constant change.
  • Ability to travel as required.
  • Health Insurance — We offer subsidized plan options with an optional pre‑tax Health Savings Account (HSA), including an annual employer contribution and investment options. The plans offer a prescription benefit and telehealth.

  • 401(k) — UE makes a 3% safe harbor non‑elective contribution beginning the first of the month after date of hire; these funds are vested immediately. After one year of service, employees receive a 7% profit sharing non‑elective contribution, as well as become eligible for a matched contribution of 25% of the first 5% employee deferral. Employees can make pre‑tax contributions or taxed (Roth) salary reductions.

    Catch-up contributions for employees 50 years old and over. Employer contributions are fully vested immediately.
