Job Description
Nurse Navigator – Hematology Oncology located at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) in Bethesda, MD.
The Nurse Navigator serves as a consistent care coordinator to eligible beneficiaries at the Murtha Cancer Center WRNMMC, ensuring timely access and seamless coordination of services throughout the continuum of cancer care. The Navigator is an integral, professional member of the interdisciplinary team promoting optimal patient care.
Due to clearance requirements, U.S. citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a T3/Secret clearance may be required. An active nursing license in the state of Maryland is required.
Responsibilities- Meet with patients and families to provide emotional support and guidance following a cancer diagnosis through end‑stage disease if necessary.
- Provide medical information, education, and share knowledge regarding internal and external support services and resources.
- Facilitate rapid scheduling, coordinate follow‑up care, and track patients to ensure completion of recommended treatment plans.
- Identify and assist patients and families in eliminating potential barriers to care by referring to appropriate resources.
- Extract demographic, clinical, and laboratory data from DoD electronic and paper clinical data systems.
- Assist in the development, testing, and revision of project/investigation forms (case report forms, data extraction tools, etc.).
- Review new patient records and screen patients for eligibility to participate in research protocols.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor, including attendance at required training.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (required).
- Minimum of 3–5 years of experience (required).
- Registered Nurse licensed in the state of Maryland.
- BLS certification (required).
Skills and Abilities
- At least 1 year in clinical research care.
- Prior oncology experience.
- Excellent, detail‑oriented organizational and data entry skills.
- Effective, empathetic communication with patients, families, providers, and external audiences.
- Knowledge of adult learning competencies and patient teaching skills.
- Self‑management skills reflecting motivation, initiative, and fiscal responsibility.
- Flexibility in responding to changing system needs and managed‑care reimbursement issues.
- Ability to assess, plan, intervene, and evaluate the physical, emotional, and educational needs of patients.
- Advanced knowledge of screening, diagnostic tools, and treatment options for breast cancer.
- Experience working in protocol/pathway‑driven environments with ability to make appropriate referrals.
- Ability to anticipate patient needs and act using approved guidelines, protocols, and pathways.
- Basic understanding of procedures commonly performed in ambulatory settings.
- Knowledge of federal regulations regarding the use of human subjects in research.
- Knowledge of clinical medicine and procedures necessary for performing research tasks; proficiency in data acquisition related to research protocols.
- U.S. Citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain a T3/Secret security clearance (may be required).
- Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods.
- Primarily in a clinical setting.
- Annual salary range: $77,600 – $110,000 (actual salary based on experience, education, etc.).
