Position Summary

Nurse Navigator – Hematology Oncology at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC), Bethesda, MD. Responsible for coordinating care for eligible beneficiaries at the Murtha Cancer Center, ensuring timely access to services and supporting patients and families throughout the cancer care continuum as part of the Interdisciplinary team.

Responsibilities
  • Meet with patients and families to provide emotional support and guidance following the cancer diagnosis through end‑stage disease as necessary.
  • Provide medical information, education, and share knowledge regarding internal and external support services and resources.
  • Facilitate rapid scheduling, coordination of follow‑up care, and track patients to ensure completion of recommended treatment plans.
  • Identify and assist patients and families in eliminating potential barriers to care by referring to appropriate resources.
  • Extract demographic, clinical, and laboratory data from DoD electronic and paper clinical data systems.
  • Assist in development, testing, and revision of project/investigation forms (case report forms, data extraction tools, etc.).
  • Review new patient records and screen patients for eligibility to participate in research protocols.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or directed by the supervisor, including attendance of required training.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of experience.
  • Licensed registered nurse in the state of Maryland.
  • BLS certification.
  • Minimum of 1 year in clinical research care.
  • Prior oncology experience.
  • Excellent, detail‑oriented organizational and data entry skills.
  • Strong communication skills and empathy toward patients, families, providers, and external audiences.
  • Knowledge of adult learning competencies and patient teaching skills.
  • Self‑management skills reflecting motivation, initiative, and fiscal responsibility.
  • Flexibility in responding to changing system needs and keeping current with managed care and reimbursement issues.
  • Ability to assess, plan, intervene, and evaluate the physical, emotional, and educational needs of patients.
  • Advanced knowledge of current screening, diagnostic tools, and treatment options for breast cancer patients.
  • Experience working in protocol/pathway‑driven environments and ability to make appropriate referrals.
  • Ability to anticipate patient needs and take appropriate action according to approved guidelines, protocols, and pathways.
  • Basic understanding of procedures commonly done in the ambulatory setting.
  • Knowledge of Federal regulations regarding the use of human subjects in research.
  • Knowledge of clinical medicine and procedures/techniques necessary for performing research tasks; proficiency in data acquisition and clinical responsibilities related to research protocols.
  • U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain a T3/Secret security clearance (may be required).
Physical Capabilities

Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods.

Work Environment

Work will be primarily in a clinical setting.

Compensation

Annual salary range: $77,600–$110,000, based on experience and education.
