Job Description & How to Apply Below

Overview

We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student to join the team of Dr. Sebastian Scheich at the Department of Hematology and Oncology at the Goethe University Hospital Frankfurt. The position is limited to a period of 3 years.

The Department offers the full spectrum of blood and cancer diagnostics and therapy. The Emmy-Noether research group of Dr. Sebastian Scheich is part of the Frankfurt Cancer Institute (FCI) and focuses on aggressive lymphoma biology and signaling. The lab is funded by grants from philanthropy and several governmental organizations (BMFTR, DFG) and is embedded in a vibrant research environment within the FCI with international collaborations.

Cutting-edge technologies include genome-wide CRISPR/Cas9 screens, quantitative functional proteomics and super resolution microscopy (dSTORM, single molecule tracking, SIM) to dissect oncogenic signaling pathways, study therapy resistance mechanisms and to find novel therapeutic vulnerabilities.

Your Role

The current research projects are based on a recent publication identifying N-linked glycosylation as a therapeutic target for the treatment of aggressive lymphomas (Scheich et al., Cancer Disc May 4:

CD-22-1401;
Phelan and Scheich et al. Cancer Cell. 2024 Feb 12;42(2):238-252.e9).

  • Your project will be a follow-up based on preliminary data to mechanistically dissect oncogenic signalling pathways in lymphoma models
  • Conduction of genome-scale CRISPR/Cas9 screens and functional proteomic experiments including posttranslational modification profiling
  • Utilization of cutting-edge imaging modalities including dSTORM, single molecule tracking, structured illumination microscopy (SIM) and proximity ligation assays
  • Use of preclinical in vivo mouse models to study lymphoma biology
  • Independent planning, execution and analysis of experiments in the field of lymphoma research
  • Application of standard molecular biology and biochemistry methods (tissue culture, flow cytometry, western blotting)
Your skills
  • Master degree or equivalent in molecular medicine, biology, biochemistry or a related field
  • Solid hands-on research experience in basic cell biology, biochemistry and molecular biology methods
  • Confidence and willingness to work with rodent models
  • Fascination and motivation for biomedical research in the field of cancer biology
  • Enthusiasm to learn and implement novel technologies
  • High motivation for experimental lab work, analysis of “omics” data and data presentation
  • Ability to work in a team, sense of responsibility and proactivity
  • Basic knowledge in MS Office (Word, Excel)
