DescriptionThe National Library of Medicine (NLM), the world's largest medical library, is a global leader in medical informatics and computational biology research. The NLM Division of Intramural Research (DIR) focuses on two key areas within computational biomedical sciences:
At the heart of NLM’s research initiatives are its principal investigators, who spearhead transformative advancements in their fields. The projects within NLM’s DIR are organized into six core research areas:
- Evolutionary Genomics and Biomolecular Structure
- Health Information Standards and Discovery
- Image Processing
- Natural Language Processing
- Networks, Gene Regulation, and Chromatin
- Statistical Methods

ResponsibilitiesAs a participant, you will have the opportunity to:
- Engage in independent research under the mentorship of NLM‑DIR staff.
- Explore biomedical resources through seminars, workshops, and lectures.
- Enhance communication skills by presenting findings, refining work through peer critiques, and improving writing and presentation skills.
- Benefit from career development programs offered by NLM’s Training Office and the NIH Office of Intramural Training and Education.
- Collaborate across research communities, including other NIH intramural laboratories and extramural academic institutions.

Stipend and BenefitsYou will receive a competitive stipend determined by NIH to cover living expenses and other costs. Stipends are typically based on academic level, discipline, and experience. You may also be eligible for a health insurance allowance and reimbursement for travel expenses.

Nature of the AppointmentThis program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), is established through an interagency agreement between DOE and NLM. Participants will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, NIH, NLM, DIR, or any other office or agency. Instead, participants will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

- Strong foundation in biology, mathematics, statistics, computer science, or a related discipline.
- Experience with computing and information systems, including programming skills.
- Background in computer science and/or computer engineering education is advantageous but not required.
Applicants must have completed or be actively pursuing a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral degree in a related field.
The ideal candidates will be early career, currently pursuing or having recently completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral degree within the last five years. If more than five years have elapsed since receipt of the degree, the applicant must have an academic background and experience in a relevant field and must be seeking to gain new knowledge/experience to expand career opportunities or advance professionally.
